Can you fish at night?
Do not treat a fishing permit as automatic permission to fish through the night. Oklahoma City describes lake hours as generally 5 a.m.–11 p.m., while its permit wording says lakes may be used any time or day. Because those statements can be read differently and may be updated, check the current Lake Hefner page or contact the city before planning a nighttime trip. Bowfishing is specifically daylight-only.

A separate Oklahoma City boating permit is required for a boat, kayak, canoe or paddleboat on city waters. Oklahoma registration is also required for vessels, except kayaks, canoes and paddleboats. The boating permit is separate from the fishing permit.

- Buy the Oklahoma City fishing permit that covers your visit; a state license alone is not sufficient for most anglers ages 16–61.
- Check the current city rules for prices, lake hours, pier availability and any temporary closures.
- Pack no more than three rods or lines per person and keep each line within the three-hook rule unless using the stated artificial-lure exception.
- Review the species-specific limits before keeping fish, including the bass, blue-catfish, hybrid-bass and walleye size restrictions.
- If bringing a vessel, obtain the separate boating permit, meet registration requirements and complete zebra-mussel prevention steps.
