How Are Farmed Fish Vaccinated? Injection, Immersion, Feed and Spray

Farmed fish receive vaccines by injection, immersion, spray or feed. The right route depends on species, pathogen, fish size, life stage, vaccine and farm conditions.

Farmed fish are vaccinated by injection, immersion, spray or oral delivery in feed. The farm’s fish-health team selects a route for the species, target pathogen, fish size and life stage, vaccine, and production system. There is no single vaccination method or universal schedule for all aquaculture.

Why farms use different vaccination routes

A vaccine has to expose the fish’s immune system to antigens from a particular pathogen. The best way to do that depends on how the pathogen enters the fish, how large the fish are, how they are raised, the protection required, and what handling and equipment the farm can manage.

  • Fish size and life stage: individual injection is generally more practical for larger fish, while batch methods suit many small fish and hatchery stages.
  • Pathogen and infection route: the route must deliver antigen where it can stimulate useful immunity.
  • Handling and labour: individual dosing is precise but labour-intensive; batch treatment reduces some handling but brings its own technical limits.
  • Product instructions and regulation: the approved label and local veterinary guidance determine the dose, timing, fish size, and permitted use.

Vaccination is one part of a health plan, alongside monitoring, suitable diets, appropriate stocking density, water and culture conditions, and biosecurity.

Injection vaccination

During injection vaccination, trained staff give each fish a measured dose, commonly into the body cavity (intraperitoneal injection) or muscle (intramuscular injection). The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service also lists subcutaneous injection in its route comparison.

Fish are normally anesthetized before injection to reduce movement and stress. Needle size, fish size and accurate placement matter: an incorrectly placed needle can injure a fish or fail to deliver the dose properly. Because every fish must be caught and handled, injection requires substantial labour and can be stressful if the operation is poorly managed.

Injection provides direct antigen delivery and can carry adjuvants. In the USDA comparison, injection is associated with fish above 15 g, and typical injection volumes are listed as 0.1–0.5 ml. Those are technical comparison figures, not universal thresholds or operating instructions; the current vaccine label and veterinary protocol control the actual procedure.

For suitable species and products, injection can provide stronger or longer-lasting protection than some non-injection routes. The duration is not universal and must be checked for the specific vaccine, pathogen and fish.

Immersion vaccination: treating fish in water

Immersion vaccination exposes a batch of fish to vaccine in water. A product may be used as a short, concentrated dip or a longer bath at a lower concentration. Antigens contact immune surfaces such as the skin and gills.

Batch treatment makes immersion useful for small fish and hatchery stages. It avoids putting a needle into every fish, although fish still have to be moved and managed. The vaccine is diluted through a relatively large volume of water, and the method becomes less economical as fish get larger.

The USDA comparison associates immersion with fish around 1–5 g. That range describes the report’s route comparison rather than a rule for every species or product. Exposure time, concentration, water quality and handling requirements must come from the approved protocol; figures from one product should not be generalized to another.

Oral vaccination through feed

Oral vaccines are supplied with feed. Vaccine may be mixed into or coated onto feed, and live food organisms can be used for fry or small fingerlings. This route can fit normal feeding and avoids handling each fish individually.

Oral delivery is technically difficult. The antigen must remain effective during feed processing, survive contact with water, be eaten in a sufficient amount, and withstand digestion long enough to stimulate immunity. Coatings can help reduce leaching or breakdown, but uptake is still uneven when fish eat different amounts.

The USDA review characterizes oral protection as moderate and variable compared with other methods and notes that it may be useful as a booster. The USDA comparison associates oral delivery with fish around 1–5 g, but the suitable size and use depend on the product. Commercial availability also varies by country and species; an older publication’s statement about limited oral products is not a current global product list.

Spray or shower vaccination

In spray vaccination, a vaccine solution is sprayed over fish in a batch. The USDA technical review includes spray or shower treatment as a fourth route and describes it as feasible for groups of fish.

Spray still requires fish handling and specialized machinery. The evidence base supplied for this overview provides less detail on how widely it is used across species and jurisdictions, so it should not be treated as equally common everywhere.

How the routes compare

Route How it is delivered Typical strengths Main limitations USDA comparison
Injection Individual dose into muscle or body cavity; subcutaneous injection is also listed Direct, measured delivery; can accommodate adjuvants Individual handling, labour, equipment and handling stress Associated with fish above 15 g; typical volumes in the report are 0.1–0.5 ml
Immersion Fish exposed to vaccine solution as a dip or bath Batch treatment; practical for many small fish Requires water and handling; dilution and volume make larger-fish use less economical Associated with fish around 1–5 g
Oral Vaccine mixed with or coated onto feed, or carried by live food Little individual handling; fits feeding routines Variable intake and protection; antigen can leach, degrade or be digested Associated with fish around 1–5 g; protection described as moderate and variable
Spray Vaccine sprayed or showered over a group Batch treatment is possible Handling and specialized machinery; use varies by setting Included as a route; a general fish-size range is not established here

The size ranges and volumes in this table are comparison details from the USDA report, not universal dosing rules.

  1. Identify the target: confirm the pathogen, disease risk and any approved vaccine for the species and region.
  2. Match the life stage: consider immune development, fish size, production stage and whether fish can be handled individually.
  3. Consider the infection route: choose delivery that can generate useful protection against the way the pathogen enters and spreads.
  4. Assess the operation: account for labour, anesthetic and handling capacity, water volume, feed systems, machinery and fish-welfare controls.
  5. Follow the product protocol: use the label and veterinary instructions for dose, concentration, exposure time, temperature, preparation, withdrawal or other restrictions, and records.

There is no universal vaccination age or booster interval. Species, water temperature, pathogen, immune development and the particular product all affect timing. A schedule must therefore be specified for a named species, disease and jurisdiction.

Does vaccination replace antibiotics?

No. Vaccines prevent or reduce specific diseases; they do not guarantee that a farm will have no illness. Monitoring, low-stress conditions, nutritious feed, suitable density and other preventive measures remain necessary.

For U.S. farmed salmon, NOAA Fisheries says vaccination has reduced—and in some cases eliminated—the need for antibiotics. It also says antibiotics are used under veterinary direction to treat bacterial infections case by case, rather than as routine prevention. That statement is specific to the U.S. salmon context and should not be generalized to every fish-farming system.

NOAA’s fish-health overview, last updated September 19, 2024, lists vaccines, probiotics, limiting culture density and high-quality diets among measures used to control bacterial disease. It describes viral-disease management as including monitoring and healthy culture conditions, while some viral vaccines were described as under development or experimental on that overview page; product status can change by species and country.

What is research rather than routine practice?

UKRI has described research led by Professor Chris Secombes using silicon nanoparticles to deliver oral vaccine antigens to salmon. The work examined furunculosis and salmonid alphavirus, reported the approach as safe in the study, and showed that nanoparticles could carry bacterial and viral antigens.

This is research aimed at future oral-vaccine development, not evidence that nanoparticle delivery is a routine commercial vaccination method on fish farms.

What the general answer does—and does not—establish

Farmed fish can be vaccinated through injection, immersion, feed-based oral delivery or spray. Which route is used is a species-, pathogen-, product- and farm-specific decision.

A general explanation cannot supply a valid current product list, vaccination calendar, booster interval or approved dose for a particular fish or country. Those details require the current label and local regulator or aquatic-veterinary guidance.
