Its antenna-like rod is called the illicium, and the glowing bait at the rod’s tip is the esca. In many species, bacteria living inside the esca produce the light that draws prey toward the female’s mouth.
What is the antenna on an anglerfish?
The “antenna” is not a feeler or separate limb. It evolved from the front part of the anglerfish’s dorsal fin. That modified fin ray, the illicium, can be held above the head like a fishing rod. At its end is the esca, a soft or sac-like lure whose shape varies among species.
In the darkness of the deep ocean, the moving illicium and conspicuous esca function as bait. Rather than chase every meal, the anglerfish positions the lure and waits for an animal to come close enough for its large mouth to engulf it.
How does the anglerfish’s lure glow?
Many deep-sea anglerfish have a light-producing esca containing symbiotic bacteria, commonly described as Photobacterium. The bacteria generate bioluminescence, producing the lure’s faint blue glow. Smithsonian Ocean describes this as a bacterial light, while Monterey Bay Aquarium describes the rod as ending in a sac containing bioluminescent bacteria.

The glow is a biological partnership: the fish provides a protected home and nutrients, and the bacteria provide visible light. The exact structure and chemistry of the lure differ among anglerfish groups, so not every anglerfish relative uses a glowing lure in precisely the same way.
Why does the anglerfish have an antenna?
The illicium and esca help the fish attract prey in water where sunlight does not reach. A potential meal may investigate the small light, mistaking it for a living organism. When it approaches, the anglerfish can open its expandable mouth and capture it with little pursuit.

Do male and female anglerfish both have the glowing lure?
The conspicuous fishing-rod-like lure is associated with adult females of deep-sea anglerfish. In some species, males are tiny compared with females and attach to a female as parasites, obtaining food and reproductive access from her. Their anatomy and lifestyle are therefore very different from the large, lure-bearing female that appears in most photographs and illustrations.
How large are deep-sea anglerfish, and how deep do they live?
Size and habitat vary widely across the group. Monterey Bay Aquarium’s general deep-sea anglerfish profile gives a maximum of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters), while its fanfin anglerfish profile lists a much smaller maximum of about 20 centimeters and a depth range of roughly 700–3,000 meters.

| Monterey Bay Aquarium, deep-sea anglerfish profile | Over 200 species; individuals up to 4 feet (1.2 m) | A broad group-level description |
| Monterey Bay Aquarium, fanfin anglerfish (Caulophryne jordani) profile | About 700–3,000 m deep; up to 20 cm | Measurements for one named species |
| NOAA Ocean Exploration, 2012 educational page | 167 species in 11 families | A narrower primarily bathypelagic scope and an older classification snapshot |
The species totals are not necessarily contradictory: the Monterey Bay figure covers a broader set of deep-sea anglerfishes, whereas NOAA’s figure refers to primarily bathypelagic anglerfishes and uses a 2012 taxonomic treatment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is every anglerfish a deep-sea fish with a glowing antenna?
No. “Anglerfish” includes several related lineages with different habitats and lures. Deep-sea forms are the ones most strongly associated with a long illicium, a dangling esca and bacterial bioluminescence. Shallow-water relatives such as frogfish, batfish and sea toads also use modified fin rays as lures, but their lure shapes, chemistry, lighting and hunting settings can differ. A familiar image of a glowing “antenna” should therefore be identified specifically as a deep-sea anglerfish rather than applied to every member of the broader group.

- Look for a fishing-rod-like structure rising from the head.
- Call the rod the illicium.
- Call the terminal bait or light organ the esca.
- If the esca emits a blue glow, bacterial bioluminescence is the likely source in a deep-sea species.
- Remember that the dramatic lure is characteristic of adult females; males may be extremely small and attached to females.
