For a first freshwater aquarium in India, choose one betta for a solitary setup, or a properly sized group of guppies, platies or smaller danios for a community aquarium. The right fish depends on adult size, group behaviour, temperature, water chemistry and tank volume—not on the size of the container at the shop.
Quick recommendations for Indian beginners
- One-fish aquarium: a single male betta in at least 20 litres, with a filter, cover and gentle flow.
- Small community aquarium: guppies or platies, provided the tank is at least 45 litres for a small group and compatible fish are selected.
- Active shoal: smaller danios, kept in a group of at least five with open swimming space; OATA cites 45 litres as a minimum for a small shoal.
- Other beginner tropical options: some tetras, mollies, swordtails, corydoras and gouramis. Their adult size, group needs and compatibility vary by species, so identify the exact fish before buying.
These are minimum starting points, not permission to overcrowd. Larger fish, bigger groups and heavy waste production require more volume and stronger maintenance.

Why “best” depends on your aquarium
Match the fish to these constraints before you visit a shop:
- Adult size and waste: plan for the mature fish, not the juvenile in the sales tank.
- Social needs: bettas are generally kept singly; guppies, platies, tetras and danios need suitable companions.
- Water: temperature, pH and hardness must suit every species in the aquarium.
- Swimming space and current: danios need room for sustained activity, while long-finned bettas require gentle flow.
- Temperament: fin-nipping or aggressive tank mates can injure bettas and guppies.
- Maintenance: feeding, filtration and water testing matter more than a fish’s purchase price.
Beginner fish compared
| Fish | Social requirement | Tank guidance | Water and behaviour notes | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Betta | Keep a male alone; never place two males together. | At least 20 litres for one male, with filtration and a cover. | Needs gentle flow and stable tropical conditions. | Long fins are vulnerable to sharp décor and fin-nipping tank mates. A small container is not an adequate permanent home. |
| Guppy | Social; keep a compatible group and plan for frequent breeding if both sexes are present. | At least 45 litres is a practical starting point for a small group of smaller fish. | General guidance: 20–28°C and pH 7.0–8.0. Peaceful and usually undemanding. | Weekly partial water changes are strongly recommended; population can grow quickly. |
| Platy | Peaceful community fish; keep with compatible companions. | Use a volume appropriate to the adult fish and group; 45 litres is a sensible minimum starting point for a small community. | Generally hardy, but match water chemistry and temperature before mixing. | Livebearers can produce many fry, increasing bioload. |
| Danio | Keep at least five. | At least 45 litres for a small shoal of smaller danios, with open swimming room. | Very active; requires good circulation and unobstructed length. | Not a good match for a tiny desktop tank or slow, easily stressed fish. |
| Tetra | Most are shoaling fish; the exact species determines group size. | Tank volume is species-dependent; identify the species first. | Peaceful community option when temperature and water chemistry overlap. | “Tetra” covers many species with different adult sizes and care needs. |
| Molly | Peaceful and social; avoid crowding. | Choose volume by adult size and group; do not use a shop bowl as a guide. | General guidance: 20–28°C and pH 7.0–8.0. | Adults and breeding can create a substantial bioload. |
Betta or guppy for a first aquarium?
Choose a betta when you want one fish
A betta is the clearer choice for a single-fish display. Provide at least 20 litres, a secure cover, filtration and gentle flow. OATA’s warning is important: “However, this does not mean they require any less care than other species of fish and will still require an appropriate aquarium with adequate filtration.” Keep male bettas apart; do not assume a divided or crowded tank is automatically safe.

Choose guppies when you want a community
Guppies are active, generally peaceful and suitable for a properly maintained community aquarium. They need a compatible group, stable water and enough space for the population they may produce. Separate sexes or plan for fry, and avoid combining them with fin-nipping or predatory fish.
How many fish fit in a 2-foot tank?
“Two-foot” describes length, not volume. Measure the aquarium’s actual litres and account for substrate, décor, filtration and the adult size of every fish. A 2-foot tank may be suitable for a small group of smaller community fish if its volume, cycling and maintenance support them, but it is not automatically suitable for danios, mollies or a mixed collection. Stock one social group at a time, add fish slowly and test water between additions.
Equipment to buy before the fish
- Freshwater test kit: monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness. OATA recommends testing at least weekly.
- Gentle sponge filter: provides biological filtration and is appropriate for many small aquariums and betta setups.
- Adjustable heater: use one when room temperature cannot hold the species’ target tropical range; verify temperature with a thermometer.
- Water conditioner: treat replacement tap water for chlorine or chloramine before it enters the aquarium.
- Safe décor and cover: use smooth ornaments and plants; avoid sharp edges that can tear long fins.
Set up and cycle the aquarium
- Choose the aquarium from adult size and social requirements, not the shop container.
- Install the filter, heater where needed, thermometer, substrate and safe décor.
- Run the aquarium through a nitrogen cycle before stocking. Beneficial bacteria must establish before fish waste is added.
- Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness. Do not add fish while toxic ammonia or nitrite is present.
- Introduce fish gradually so filtration can adjust to the increasing waste load.
- Feed modestly. Remove uneaten food rather than allowing it to decay.
Routine care that prevents common failures
Perform a regular partial water change, treating new water with conditioner. OATA’s guppy guidance says, “At least once every week, a partial water change of 25% is strongly recommended.” Rinse filter media in removed aquarium water, never under untreated tap water, so beneficial bacteria are not unnecessarily destroyed. Continue testing after stocking and whenever fish appear stressed, stop eating or gasp at the surface.

India has a large ornamental-fish hobby: the Department of Fisheries reported about 6,000 aquarium shops and 10 lakh hobbyists in 2025. The Press Information Bureau reported that around 90% of the country’s ornamental-fish trade is freshwater in 2024. A Department of Fisheries brief identifies goldfish as the most preferred and dominant species among Indian hobbyists, but popularity is not a welfare standard.

Goldfish should not be treated as a default small-aquarium fish. Their adult size and waste production demand a setup planned around mature animals, not the juvenile commonly sold in small bowls.
For local care information, the PIB says: “ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) with financial support under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) from Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India has developed the ‘Rangeen Machhli’ app.” The app provides ornamental-fish care, breeding and maintenance information in eight Indian languages and includes an aquarium-shop directory.
Buy responsibly and never release aquarium fish
Ask sellers whether fish are captive-bred, healthy and responsibly sourced, and check current quarantine and acclimation advice. For imported fish, consult the latest Aquatic Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS) sanitary protocol because notifications and procedures can change.
Never put unwanted fish in drains, rivers, lakes or ponds. ICAR-CIFRI has documented established invasive exotic fishes in India, including Nile tilapia, common carp, suckermouth armored catfish and African catfish, with impacts on biodiversity, ecosystems and livelihoods. Rehome fish through a responsible aquarist, rescue group or aquarium shop instead.
Quick Recap
A simple decision rule
- Have one fish and at least 20 litres? Consider a single betta with gentle filtration.
- Have at least 45 litres and want a peaceful group? Consider guppies or platies after checking sex ratios and breeding.
- Have at least 45 litres of swimming length and enjoy active fish? Consider a shoal of at least five smaller danios.
- Want tetras, mollies, swordtails, corydoras or gouramis? Identify the exact species and design the aquarium around its adult size and social needs.
