That volume gives a single fish room to swim and hide and makes temperature and water chemistry easier to keep stable. A cycled aquarium with gentle filtration, a heater, a secure lid and safe cover is more suitable than a bowl or tiny decorative container.
Why 20 liters is the practical home target
The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) recommends an aquarium of at least 20 liters for a single male betta. Krista Keller, DVM, of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, gives the equivalent practical target of a 5-gallon tank or larger (about 19 liters).
More water does not replace maintenance, but it slows swings in temperature, ammonia, nitrite and other water conditions. A larger footprint also provides more usable swimming length and space for plants and a refuge without crowding the fish.
“Betta fish are often seen living in bowls that are too small to allow for normal swimming and hiding behavior.”

Can a betta live in a 5-liter tank?
A 5-liter container is below the evidence-based home target for a permanent setup. It may be sold as a betta container, but its small water volume leaves less margin for temperature and nitrogen-cycle changes and limits furnishing and swimming space. If a fish is currently in 5 liters, treat that as a temporary situation while moving it to a properly filtered, heated aquarium of at least 20 liters.
Do not interpret a retail or temporary-housing allowance as a recommendation for lifelong home care. A 2024 peer-reviewed welfare study proposed 5.6 liters as a minimum for display and sale, while explicitly advising larger tanks for home keeping.

Why some sources mention volumes under 20 liters
Small figures come from contexts with different goals from a permanent home aquarium:

| Volume | Context | What it means for a home keeper |
|---|---|---|
| 1 liter | Germany’s ornamental-fish table, for extended retail presentation of an individually housed male | Retail guidance, not a permanent home target |
| Below 4 liters | Volumes permitted in New Zealand’s temporary-housing code for Betta splendens | A temporary-housing exception, not a suitable lifelong setup |
| 5.6 liters | 2024 welfare study minimum for display and sale | The study advises larger aquariums for home keeping |
| About 19–20 liters | University of Illinois advice of 5 gallons and OATA’s recommendation of 20 liters for one male | Use this as the minimum practical home target |
Display, sale and emergency-holding rules address limited-duration management. Home aquariums must support stable conditions over the fish’s entire life, which is why the recommended volume is higher.
Can bettas live in bowls?
Bowls are a poor permanent environment. Their shape usually offers little swimming length, limited room for a filter and heater, and no secure place to arrange cover. Keller states that bettas “should not live in bowls” and recommends a 5-gallon glass or plastic tank or larger.

- Perfect Mini Habitat: Measuring just 7.8"L x 5.8"W x 6"H, our space-saving small fish tank with filter and light fits effortlessly on desks, countertops, or shelves. An ideal nano aquarium for bettas, shrimp, guppy fry (like sea monkeys), aquatic plants, or even as a frog habitat, offering versatile usage in any small space
- Vibrant 3-Color LED Lighting: Illuminate your underwater world with adjustable LED lights featuring 3 color modes (white, blue, warm white) and 10 brightness levels. Create the perfect ambiance to showcase your aquatic pets and promote healthy plant growth
- Discreet & Silent Filtration: A concealed filter pump system operates quietly out of sight to keep water crystal clear and well-oxygenated. This self cleaning fish tank design minimizes maintenance while ensuring a healthy environment for delicate fish and shrimp
- Perfect Beginner’s Tank & Present: This all-in-one fish tank starter kit is an ideal choice for first-time owners and makes a wonderful present for young pet enthusiasts. Parents can use this engaging betta tank to introduce youngsters to pet care responsibilities. It also works perfectly as a temporary tank during cleaning or a quarantine space for sick fish
- Convenient Feeding Design: The top cover includes a dedicated feeding opening, allowing easy access for daily feeding without needing to open the entire lid—keeping your fish secure and reducing evaporation
A bowl is also harder to keep consistently warm and biologically stable. If a bowl is being used temporarily, avoid abrupt temperature changes and move the fish to a cycled aquarium as soon as possible.
What a 20-liter betta aquarium needs
A cycled filter with gentle flow
Use a filter that supports the nitrogen cycle but does not buffet the fish. Bettas are not suited to strong, unadjustable currents; choose a model with flow control, a baffled outlet or another way to create calm water.
Reliable heat and a lid
OATA says a heater is required year-round. Select a heater compatible with the aquarium’s actual water volume and use a thermometer to verify the temperature. Keep a secure lid in place, because bettas can jump, while leaving access to the surface for their air-breathing behavior.

Safe cover and furnishings
Provide live or silk plants and a smooth refuge so the fish can hide and rest. Avoid sharp plastic and rough ornaments that can catch or tear long fins. Arrange decorations so open swimming space remains available and the fish can reach the surface easily.
Water testing and maintenance
OATA identifies a freshwater test kit as essential and recommends regular checks, including once-weekly testing. In a cycled aquarium, test according to your maintenance plan and investigate any ammonia or nitrite reading rather than relying on the tank’s size to prevent problems.

Male bettas
Keep male bettas separately. Do not add another male to the 20-liter aquarium, even if a divider or visual barrier appears to leave room; separate, fully maintained aquariums are the safer arrangement.

Female groups
OATA recommends at least 60 liters for a group of females. A group requires careful stocking, abundant cover, compatible individuals and close observation because aggression can occur. The 20-liter single-fish recommendation does not scale directly to a group.
Community aquariums
A betta community should be attempted only with placid, compatible species and additional water volume and filtration. Compatibility is individual and cannot be guaranteed by tank size alone; be prepared to separate fish if chasing, fin damage or persistent stress appears.
How to choose between suitable tanks
When comparing aquariums, start with usable water volume and then check the practical features that determine whether that volume will work:
- Footprint and swimming length: a longer layout is generally more useful than a tall, narrow container.
- Stable conditions: more water and adequate surface area make temperature and nitrogen-cycle management less volatile.
- Flow control: confirm that the filter can be adjusted or baffled for gentle circulation.
- Heater compatibility: verify that a safe, adjustable heater is rated for the tank’s volume.
- Lid security: the cover should prevent jumping while allowing equipment and surface access.
- Furnishing and cleaning access: leave room for plants and a refuge, with enough access to remove waste and perform water changes.
For one betta, choose the largest practical aquarium at or above 20 liters rather than selecting the smallest container that technically holds water.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Set up one betta in a cycled, heated and gently filtered aquarium holding at least 20 liters (5 US gallons). Five-liter containers and bowls are undersized for permanent care, while groups of female bettas require OATA’s substantially larger 60-liter recommendation.
