It offers a practical balance between trapping waste, maintaining flow and providing internal surface for beneficial bacteria. Choose 10–20 PPI foam as a coarse first stage or prefilter when debris is heavy, and add 40 PPI foam only when you need finer water polishing and can clean it more often.
Which PPI foam should you use?
PPI means pores per inch. A lower number describes larger openings: water passes easily and the foam clogs more slowly. A higher number has smaller openings, captures finer particles and usually needs more frequent cleaning.
| Foam density | Best use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 10 PPI | Very coarse prefilter or first stage | Handles heavy debris and resists clogging; leaves fine particles for later media. AMTRA lists this as its coarse grade. |
| 15 PPI | Coarse general mechanical filtration | Aquarium Co-Op describes its 15 PPI pad as coarse and the slowest of its listed pads to clog. |
| 20 PPI | Coarse-to-medium first stage | Useful where you want more capture than 10–15 PPI without the faster loading of fine foam. AMTRA lists 20 PPI as medium; OASE describes 20 PPI BioMaster foam as ultra-coarse mechanical and biological media. |
| 30 PPI | Default, general-purpose filter foam | Aquarium Co-Op says this should make up most sponge used in a filter. Fluval specifies 30 PPI for the AC20 Bio-Foam. |
| 40 PPI | Final polishing layer | Captures smaller suspended particles but loads faster. Aquarium Co-Op advises more frequent cleaning for its 40 PPI pad. |
PPI ratings help compare products from the same maker, but they are not a universal performance standard across every manufacturer. Foam structure, thickness, surface area and the filter’s flow path also affect results.
Why 30 PPI is the practical default
Medium foam around 30 PPI usually gives a better balance than using only coarse or only fine foam. It physically strains waste while allowing enough flow for a pump to operate normally, and its internal surface can host nitrifying bacteria. Fluval describes its 30 PPI AC20 foam as trapping debris while providing surface for beneficial bacteria. Aquarium Co-Op likewise positions 30 PPI as the main sponge grade rather than a specialized polishing layer.

Use 30 PPI as the main block when your aquarium has an ordinary fish load and the filter is not repeatedly losing flow to debris. If the foam becomes dirty quickly, do not automatically move to a finer grade: a coarser first stage may solve the clogging problem more effectively.
When to choose coarse foam instead
Heavy waste or a fast-clogging pump
Use 10–20 PPI foam at the water-entry side when large particles, plant fragments or uneaten food reach the filter quickly. The larger pores preserve flow longer and make a practical prefilter. You can follow it with 30 PPI foam to catch smaller waste.
Protecting filter compartments and livestock
A coarse prefilter on an intake can reduce the amount of debris entering an impeller chamber and can keep small animals from being drawn toward the intake. Make sure the prefilter itself does not restrict flow as it loads.

When fine foam is worth using
Clearer-looking water
Add 40 PPI foam after coarser mechanical media when your priority is removing small suspended particles. It works best as a final layer, not as the only sponge in a dirty aquarium.
The maintenance trade-off
Fine foam has smaller openings, so it fills with debris sooner. Expect to inspect it more often and rinse it before the restriction causes a visible drop in circulation. If you cannot service the filter regularly, stay with 30 PPI or use a coarse-to-medium sequence instead.
Match the foam to your filter
Model-specific inserts
A purpose-made insert is the simplest option when your filter manufacturer supplies one. Fluval Bio-Foam for the AC20 is a model-specific 30 PPI insert designed to fit without gaps; Fluval recommends replacing it every two months. Fluval also makes Bio-Foam shaped for its Nano Aquarium Filter to limit debris escaping around the media.

Cut-to-fit pads
Aquarium Co-Op sells reusable pads that are 2 inches thick and can be cut for hang-on-back, sump and canister filters. AMTRA Biocell foam is available in 10, 20 and 30 PPI and can be cut for internal, external and sump filters.
For any cut-to-fit pad, measure the chamber’s length, width and usable thickness. Trim the foam so it sits firmly against the chamber walls without buckling. Gaps let water bypass the foam, while an over-tight fit can reduce flow or deform the housing.

Specialized replacement media
API’s dual-density filtration foam is intended for the Filstar XP system and is designed to remove small waste particles. API states an effective use period of approximately one month. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee: fish load, feeding and plant debris determine the actual service interval.

How to install foam for reliable filtration
- Identify the filter and chamber. Check the model name and measure the space before buying. Use the exact insert when one is available.
- Plan water direction. Put the coarsest foam where dirty water enters, followed by 30 PPI foam and, if needed, a finer polishing layer.
- Seal the flow path. Trim cut-to-fit foam to contact the chamber walls. Do not leave channels around its edges.
- Check pump flow. After installation, confirm that the return flow is steady and that the pump is not running dry or cavitating.
- Keep established biological media. Foam can carry beneficial bacteria, so avoid replacing every established medium at once when preserving biological stability matters.
Cleaning and replacement without damaging the biofilter
Routine cleaning
Remove the foam and gently squeeze or swish it in water taken from the aquarium. This removes trapped sludge while avoiding the chlorine exposure and temperature shock associated with untreated tap water. Reinstall it as soon as practical and restore normal flow.
When to replace it
Replace foam when it is collapsing, tearing, permanently blocked or no longer holds its shape. Fluval’s AC20 instruction says, “For best results, replace every 2 months.” API gives approximately one month for its Filstar dual-density pad. Those are product recommendations; a lightly stocked tank may go longer, while a heavily fed tank may require earlier cleaning or replacement.
Preserving bacterial colonies
Do not discard all established foam and biological media simultaneously if the aquarium depends on them for nitrification. Change one component at a time and keep the remaining mature media running.

Is ordinary foam safe for an aquarium?
Use foam sold specifically for aquarium filtration. Aquarium-grade products are selected for water contact and known pore structure. Americo states that its fish-grade media is independently bioassay-tested for non-toxicity. The cited manufacturers do not establish generic upholstery, mattress or packing foam as aquarium-safe, so those materials are not a dependable substitute.
A simple buying decision
- Most community aquariums: choose 30 PPI foam that fits the filter without gaps.
- Debris-heavy tanks or clogged intakes: place 10–20 PPI foam first, then use 30 PPI behind it.
- Cloudy water from fine particles: add a removable 40 PPI polishing layer after the main foam.
- Known Fluval, API or other supported model: prefer the correctly shaped replacement insert when available.
- Unusual chamber size: use a cut-to-fit aquarium pad, measured and trimmed for a tight seal.
No independent, controlled comparison establishes one brand as universally best for clarity, flow retention or bacterial performance. The most defensible choice is therefore the aquarium-safe foam whose density, fit and cleaning schedule match your tank.
