Kekaimalu: The Real “Wholphin” That Had a Calf

Kekaimalu, born at Sea Life Park in 1985, was half Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and half false killer whale. In 2004 she gave birth to a female calf—documenting fertility in one hybrid, not a new species.

Kekaimalu was a real captive hybrid born at Sea Life Park in Hawaii on May 15, 1985. Her mother was an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and her father a false killer whale—an animal that, despite its name, belongs to the dolphin family.

Kekaimalu later produced a calf of her own. On December 23, 2004, she gave birth to a female whose ancestry was three-quarters Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and one-quarter false killer whale. That documented birth shows that this individual hybrid was fertile; it does not establish a new species or a wild population.

What is a wholphin?

“Wholphin” is a popular blended name, not a formal species designation. In Kekaimalu’s case, it describes a hybrid produced when a bottlenose dolphin and a false killer whale shared a captive pool at Sea Life Park.

Sea Life Park’s 2022–23 education guide identifies Kekaimalu as half Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and half false killer whale. An archival Los Angeles Times account also reported her 1985 birth and the park’s name for her. Secondary descriptions have portrayed her appearance as intermediate between the parent animals, but those observations should not be treated as fixed measurements or rules for every possible hybrid.

The headline language about a creature that “acts like a whale” is rhetorical. The available accounts document her parentage and reproduction, not a distinct behavior category.

Why a dolphin and a “whale” could produce a hybrid

The name false killer whale creates the apparent contradiction. NOAA explains that false killer whales are delphinids: members of the dolphin family that also includes all dolphin species and several larger animals whose common names contain “whale.”

That taxonomy makes the pairing biologically closer than the phrase “dolphin and whale” suggests. It still does not mean that any dolphin and any whale can reproduce, or that hybrid offspring are generally fertile. Kekaimalu is a specific captive case involving two closely related delphinids.

The parent animals in context

Animal Taxonomic context Role in Kekaimalu’s story
Atlantic bottlenose dolphin Dolphin family (Delphinidae) One parent; also the father of Kekaimalu’s 2004 calf
False killer whale Dolphin family (Delphinidae), despite the common name Other parent
Kekaimalu Individual hybrid, not a formally recognized species Born at Sea Life Park on May 15, 1985

How Kekaimalu was born

A bottlenose dolphin and a false killer whale were housed in the same Sea Life Park pool. Kekaimalu was born there on May 15, 1985. The park’s education material and contemporary reporting provide the clearest documentation of the event.

Her birth does not show that hybrids such as this arise routinely in the wild. It records what happened when these particular captive animals had the opportunity to mate.

Did the wholphin have babies?

Yes. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that Kekaimalu gave birth to a female calf on December 23, 2004. Because the calf’s father was an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, the calf was three-quarters bottlenose dolphin and one-quarter false killer whale.

An Associated Press report carried by Live Science quoted Sea Life Park general manager Dr. Renato Lenzi: “Mother and calf are doing very well.” This is the central biological surprise in Kekaimalu’s story: the documented hybrid reproduced.

What the calf proves—and what it does not

It demonstrates fertility in this individual

Kekaimalu’s 2004 birth is evidence that at least one hybrid of this parent combination was capable of producing offspring. The evidence is specific to her and her calf.

It does not make the wholphin a species

A hybrid label does not create a separate species. Kekaimalu is not evidence of a formally recognized “wholphin” species, and the sources do not establish a stable breeding population.

It does not show that all hybrids are fertile

Hybrid fertility varies among crosses and individuals. One successful birth cannot be generalized to every dolphin–false-killer-whale hybrid or to hybrids involving other cetaceans.

Was Kekaimalu wild, and are there wild wholphins?

Kekaimalu’s documented life began in captivity at Sea Life Park. The accounts cited for her birth and calf do not establish a naturally occurring, self-sustaining wild population of wholphins.

No reliable current 2026 population figure is established for wholphins, and the available material does not provide a peer-reviewed estimate of wild abundance. Claims that imply a common or expanding wild population go beyond the evidence presented here.

What is known about Kekaimalu today?

The Sea Life Park guide and contemporaneous reports firmly document her 1985 birth and 2004 calf. They do not resolve her current 2026 status or provide a confirmed account of the calf’s later life. Those details should remain qualified rather than filled in with assumptions.

The accurate takeaway

Kekaimalu was a documented captive hybrid born at Sea Life Park from an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and a false killer whale. The “wholphin” name is informal, and the false killer whale is a member of the dolphin family. Kekaimalu’s female calf, born in 2004, proves reproductive capability in this individual case—not the emergence of a new species or proof of a wild wholphin population.
