Researchers formally described it in PLOS One on December 10, 2025, using body form, advertisement calls, high-resolution CT scans and DNA evidence.
What is the new orange frog?
Brachycephalus lulai belongs to the Brachycephalus pernix species group, a lineage of miniature frogs endemic to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Its known range is Serra do Quiriri, a mountain range in northeastern Santa Catarina where isolated cloud-forest habitats support several closely related pumpkin toadlets.
The formal species description is published by Bornschein and colleagues in PLOS One (December 10, 2025). Read the peer-reviewed description.

The frog is only a few millimetres long. The study reports separate size ranges for the sexes:

| Females | 11.7–13.4 mm |
Adults have a bright orange body marked with small, irregular green and brown points. Colour helps make the animal visually distinctive, but it was not the sole basis for recognizing the species.
How scientists established it as a distinct species
The diagnosis combines 18 characters and several independent evidence types. The researchers examined 32 collected individuals and recorded 13 advertisement calls.
Body measurements and external traits
Researchers compared proportions, diagnostic anatomical measurements and the orange coloration with green and brown points against related Brachycephalus species.

Advertisement call
The call consists of groups of two notes, with each note containing one to four pulses. Calling males helped researchers locate animals in dense cloud-forest vegetation. Call structure also separates B. lulai from close relatives living on the same mountain range.
Internal skeleton revealed by CT
High-resolution computed tomography exposed osteological features that cannot be assessed reliably from an external view. These skeletal characters formed part of the formal diagnosis.
DNA and evolutionary relationships
The phylogenetic analysis used one mitochondrial marker, 16S rRNA, and three nuclear markers: β-fibrinogen, ribosomal Protein L3 and tyrosinase exon 1. Together with morphology and calls, the genetic results place B. lulai close to B. auroguttatus and B. quiririensis, which also occur at Serra do Quiriri.

Where it lives
Serra do Quiriri lies within the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil. The frog is associated with high-elevation cloud-forest environments, where patches of suitable habitat can be separated by unsuitable terrain or changing forest conditions. Such isolation can restrict gene flow between populations.
The authors suggest that historical shifts in climate and forest distribution may have left cloud-forest patches functioning as microrefugia. In their interpretation, this past allopatry could have helped drive local speciation. That scenario is a proposed explanation rather than a directly observed historical event.

What is known about its conservation status?
The authors propose assessing Brachycephalus lulai as Least Concern. They also propose creating the Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Serra do Quiriri to protect the new frog and other species restricted to the mountain range. The refuge is a recommendation, not an established protected area.

A proposed status does not remove the need for habitat protection. A species with a small known range can be vulnerable to habitat loss, fire, climate-driven changes in cloud-forest conditions and other pressures even when its initial assessment is not threatened.
Why this discovery matters
The description adds another narrowly distributed amphibian to a genus that the paper counted at 42 recognized species in 2025, with 35 described since 2000. It also shows why miniature frogs cannot be reliably identified by colour alone: calls, hidden skeletal structures and DNA can reveal differences among outwardly similar animals.
For Serra do Quiriri, documenting an endemic species strengthens the case for conserving the mountain’s remaining cloud-forest habitat. Protecting connected, high-elevation forest patches can help preserve the ecological conditions on which this frog and its close relatives depend.
