Deinosuchus was a giant alligatoroid crocodylian, not a dinosaur. A recent reconstruction puts one individual at about 31 feet (9.45 metres), while published estimates for the genus span roughly 8 to 12 metres because fossils are incomplete and researchers use different reconstruction methods. It lived in North American rivers, estuaries and swamps about 83–72 million years ago, where damaged dinosaur bones show that it fed on at least some dinosaurs.
Was Deinosuchus really 31 feet long?
About 31 feet is a defensible estimate for a reconstructed Deinosuchus, not an exact tape-measure result from a complete skeleton. A 2025 reconstruction report describes a Deinosuchus schwimmeri prototype measuring 31 feet (9.45 metres).
That figure fits within, but does not replace, the wider scientific range. The available fossils are incomplete, so researchers estimate total length from surviving skulls, vertebrae and other proportions. Different anatomical proxies and reconstruction assumptions produce different results.
How large was Deinosuchus according to different estimates?
| Estimate | Length | Mass | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erickson and Brochu, 1999 | 8–10 metres | 2,500–5,000 kg | Scientific estimate based on comparative growth and anatomy |
| Western Australian Museum summary | About 11 metres | 6–7 tonnes | Museum reconstruction estimate |
| 2025 reconstruction report | 31 feet (9.45 metres) | Not stated | Length of a reconstructed D. schwimmeri prototype |
| 2025 phylogenetic study | Earlier estimates reviewed at approximately 8–12 metres | Not stated | Range discussed while applying a relationship-aware estimation method |
The safest conclusion is that Deinosuchus reached roughly 9–11 metres in the best-supported reconstructions, with a broader literature range extending from about 8 to 12 metres. The 31-foot figure is therefore plausible for a large individual, but it should not be presented as the exact size of every Deinosuchus or as proof that the animal routinely exceeded 40 feet.

Where did this giant crocodylian live?
Deinosuchus occupied aquatic environments across Late Cretaceous North America, including freshwater rivers, estuaries and swamp systems. Its fossils occur on both sides of the Western Interior Seaway, the inland sea that divided the continent during part of the Cretaceous.
Laramidia
The Western Australian Museum places the largest predator population along the east coast of southern Laramidia, the western landmass created by the seaway. Those coastal river and wetland settings would have brought a very large ambush predator close to animals moving between land and water.
Appalachia and Big Bend
Smaller forms are reported from Appalachia, the eastern landmass. At Big Bend, the National Park Service interprets Deinosuchus fossils as evidence of animals living in ancient swamps and displays a life-size reconstruction. These locations were not identical habitats, so size differences may reflect geography, species or the limits of the fossil sample rather than a single uniform population.

Did Deinosuchus eat dinosaurs?
Yes, fossil damage strongly supports dinosaur feeding. Dinosaur bones preserve large, blunt crocodilian bite marks whose size, shape, geological age and aquatic setting are consistent with Deinosuchus. A systematic review of the evidence discusses feeding traces on dinosaurs, including a hadrosaurid vertebra from Coahuila, Mexico.

Big Bend fossils include dinosaur bones with heavily damaged surfaces and distinctive crocodile-like bite marks. Such traces demonstrate that Deinosuchus bit and consumed dinosaur tissue. They do not, by themselves, record whether a particular dinosaur was killed or scavenged after death. A single damaged bone can be difficult to assign to one behavior, so “fed on dinosaurs” is better supported than a claim that every marked animal was actively killed.
What dinosaurs were at risk?
The evidence establishes dinosaur feeding, not a complete prey-size list. It does not show that Deinosuchus routinely killed adult tyrannosaurs, and there is no sound basis for assigning it a regular diet of one particular dinosaur group. The documented hadrosaurid trace is important precisely because it ties the animal to a real dinosaur carcass or carcass-bearing setting without revealing the entire hunting record.

How did Deinosuchus hunt?
Ambush hunting is the leading behavioral interpretation. The National Park Service describes Deinosuchus riograndensis as probably lying submerged near shore before violently seizing dinosaurs foraging in vegetation around ancient swamps.
This is an inference, not a witnessed attack. It combines the animal’s aquatic habitat, fossil traces and what living crocodilians do today. A submerged approach would have concealed most of the body while allowing the jaws to reach animals drinking, crossing channels or feeding at the water’s edge.

Why did Deinosuchus become so huge?
The best-supported explanation is extended development and long life, not an unusually rapid juvenile growth spurt. In their 1999 study, Gregory M. Erickson and Christopher A. Brochu reported growth indices comparable to those of smaller crocodylian taxa. They concluded that Deinosuchus attained giant proportions by prolonging development.
The Western Australian Museum summarizes the same pattern as living longer rather than growing faster. In practical terms, a Deinosuchus could continue adding length and mass over a prolonged portion of its life, allowing an ordinary crocodylian growth strategy to produce an extraordinary adult.
Why that matters for size estimates
Long-lived, continuously growing animals can differ greatly in size at death. A fossil from a younger adult need not represent the maximum reached by the species. That helps explain why estimates vary among specimens and why a 31-foot reconstruction can coexist with both smaller published individuals and larger upper-end estimates.

What exactly was Deinosuchus?
Deinosuchus was an alligatoroid crocodylian from the Late Cretaceous, not a dinosaur and not a modern crocodile. “Crocodylian” is the broader group containing living crocodiles, alligators and their fossil relatives; “alligatoroid” identifies its placement within that evolutionary branch.
The genus lived approximately 83–72 million years ago. Species names used in the literature include Deinosuchus riograndensis and Deinosuchus schwimmeri. Taxonomic and size conclusions remain tied to fragmentary fossils, which is why newer studies revisit older measurements rather than treating one historical number as final.
What the fossils can—and cannot—tell us
- Well supported: Deinosuchus was a giant Late Cretaceous alligatoroid in North America.
- Well supported: It inhabited rivers, estuaries and swamps.
- Well supported: Dinosaur bones preserve large crocodilian bite traces consistent with Deinosuchus feeding.
- Strong inference: It commonly used ambush tactics near shore, based on modern crocodilian behavior and the fossil setting.
- Strong inference: Its giant size resulted from prolonged development and longevity.
- Not established: A single exact maximum length for every individual.
- Not established: A definitive bite-force figure or a routine habit of killing adult tyrannosaurs.
How should the “31-foot giant crocodile” headline be read?
Read it as a concise description of a recent reconstruction, not as a claim that every Deinosuchus measured exactly 31 feet. The underlying fossil record supports an enormous animal roughly comparable to the largest reconstructions of any crocodylian, but the responsible scientific answer is a qualified range: about 8–12 metres in the literature, with a recent prototype at 9.45 metres.
