The best aquarium accessories are the ones matched to your tank’s volume, livestock, water chemistry, temperature and plants. For most new freshwater setups, that means a correctly sized filter, a thermostatic heater when required, a separate thermometer, suitable lighting, substrate, water conditioner, test kits, a siphon, a dedicated bucket, a net and safe décor or plants.
Start with the equipment every aquarium needs
The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) shopping list includes an aquarium, filter, heater where appropriate, lighting, gravel or sand, tap-water conditioner, gravel cleaner or siphon, water-testing kits, decorations or live plants and a bucket. Buy equipment for the aquarium you actually have rather than choosing by brand name alone.

Choose a filter for water quality and fish comfort
Filtration normally combines mechanical, chemical and biological stages. Mechanical media catches suspended debris; chemical media can remove particular dissolved compounds; biological media houses bacteria that process fish waste. A filter rated for the tank’s volume is only a starting point: the fish load and the filter’s actual flow pattern matter too.
Check capacity and flow
- Use the manufacturer’s tank-size and flow ratings, then consider the number and size of fish you plan to keep.
- Choose a flow that circulates the aquarium without exhausting slow swimmers or disturbing plants and loose substrate.
- For species that dislike strong currents, use a spray bar, baffle or outlet aimed at the glass if the filter design allows it.
Plan for maintenance
Compare how easily the media can be removed, how often it needs rinsing and the ongoing cost of replacement media. Rinse reusable media in removed aquarium water rather than untreated tap water, which can damage beneficial bacterial colonies. Replace disposable media only as directed; changing every biological component at once can destabilize the system.

Heat tropical tanks and verify it independently
Tropical fish generally need a thermostatic heater set to a stable, species-appropriate range. Many cold-water species do not require a heater, so confirm the needs of the inhabitants before buying one. A heater’s dial is not a measurement of the water: place a separate thermometer in the aquarium and check it regularly.
Heater buying checks
- Select a model intended for your aquarium’s volume and the room conditions in which it will operate.
- Prefer an adjustable thermostat so the setting can match the species rather than a fixed-temperature unit.
- Use the heater according to its installation instructions, keep it fully submerged when required and unplug it before water changes if the element could be exposed.
- Investigate any mismatch between the set point and thermometer reading instead of raising the setting repeatedly.
Match lighting to fish, plants and a daily schedule
Aquarium lighting makes fish and décor visible. Live plants also need light, but requirements vary widely. Low-light plants are a better choice when the fixture is weak or the aquarium is deep; demanding plants need stronger, higher-quality light and appropriate coverage.

- QUIET AQUARIUM FILTER: The Tetra Whisper IQ Power Filter with Stay Clean technology contains a sound shield for quiet filtration less than 40 dB.
- SELF PRIMING: Submerged motor starts up with no priming required.
- CAPACITY: The Tetra Whisper IQ 45 Power Filter works in tanks up to 45 gallons (215 GPH).
- STAY CLEAN TECHNOLOGY: By maintaining healthy pH levels, creates easier maintenance for healthier fish.
- CARTRIDGE REFILLS: Change cartridges monthly; uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag Filter Cartridges (refills sold separately).
Compare lights on useful features
- Intensity and spectrum: match output to the plant species and the distance from the fixture to the substrate.
- Coverage: ensure the entire planted area receives light, not just the centre.
- Controls: a built-in timer or a plug-in timer creates a repeatable day/night cycle.
- Safety: choose equipment designed for aquarium use and protect connections from drips.
Fish benefit from a consistent period of darkness. A timer prevents irregular schedules caused by switching the light on and off by memory. Excessive light without a matching plant plan can encourage algae, so adjust duration and intensity together rather than treating a brighter fixture as automatically better.
Test and condition water before problems become visible
Clear water does not prove that water chemistry is safe. OATA recommends regularly checking ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH; hardness testing is useful when a species or the source water makes it relevant. Liquid and strip kits can both be practical—compare parameter coverage, readable results, shelf life and replacement cost.

Build a simple testing routine
- Test new water and the aquarium according to the kit instructions, especially while the biological filter is establishing.
- Record the date, result and any recent change such as a water change, new fish, medication or filter cleaning.
- Look for trends and sudden shifts rather than relying on one isolated reading.
- If results are abnormal, pause additions, check equipment and seek species-specific guidance before making large corrective changes.
Use a tap-water conditioner or dechlorinator whenever your water supply and the product directions require it. Dose the replacement water accurately. Fish have different environmental needs, and the CDC advises obtaining setup and care guidance for the species being kept.
Use substrate, plants and décor to create a safe habitat
Gravel or sand anchors plants and décor and gives the aquarium a finished structure. Choose grain size with the livestock in mind: burrowing animals, bottom feeders and species that sift substrate may need a different texture from fish that remain in open water.

- INTERNAL POWER FILTER: Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 5- to 10-gallon aquariums uses medium Whisper BioBag filter cartridges that are easy to change.
- QUIET 85 GPH MOTOR: The internal pump efficiently filters up to 85 gallons per hour.
- POWERFUL FILTRATION: Water flows through the cartridge floss, trapping debris and fish waste, while Ultra-activated carbon helps remove odor and discoloration.

- EASILY ADJUSTABLE: Adjustable clip allows for a variety of setups to easily adjust to high or low water levels.
Live plants
Plants can provide shelter and enrichment. During daylight, they use carbon dioxide and can contribute oxygen; their growth also takes up some nutrients and may help moderate the aquarium environment. Select plants according to light intensity, tank height and compatibility with the fish. Secure roots and remove decaying leaves so dead material does not become an unnecessary waste source.
Decorations
- Use ornaments, rocks and wood sold or prepared for aquarium use.
- Check every surface for sharp edges, unstable bases or openings in which fish could become trapped.
- Arrange structures so fish have both cover and adequate swimming space.
- Keep décor stable; a falling ornament can injure livestock or crack glass.
Make water changes safer with the right tools
A self-priming gravel cleaner lets you remove water and lift debris without putting your mouth on the siphon. OATA specifically advises never siphoning by mouth. Match the siphon diameter and length to the aquarium and the container you will use.

A practical buying sequence for a new tank
- Identify the species, adult size, temperature range, water-hardness preference and expected bioload.
- Choose the aquarium and substrate, allowing enough swimming area and safe floor support.
- Buy a filter sized for the volume and livestock, then confirm its flow will be comfortable.
- Add a thermostatic heater and separate thermometer if the species needs warm, stable water.
- Select a light that covers the tank and matches the plants, plus a timer for a consistent cycle.
- Purchase conditioner, a test kit, a self-priming siphon, a dedicated bucket and a net.
- Install only aquarium-safe, stable décor and plants, leaving clear circulation and swimming paths.
- Test and record water conditions regularly, and adjust equipment or husbandry based on the results and the animals’ behavior.
What matters more than brand names
Correct sizing and compatibility have more impact than a famous label. Compare products on tank-size rating, usable flow or heating capacity, adjustability, noise, energy use, safety features, maintenance demands, replacement-media cost, warranty and ease of cleaning. For lights, add plant intensity, coverage, timer controls and splash resistance. For test kits, prioritize the parameters your livestock requires and results you can read consistently.
Species-specific advice should decide the final purchase. There is no universal stocking rule that safely replaces information about adult size, behavior, filtration, swimming space and maintenance capacity.
