Vasuki indicus was a real extinct snake from what is now Gujarat, India, and its modeled length is about 10.9–15.2 meters (36–50 feet). That range could make it longer than Titanoboa in some reconstructions and longer than many estimates for an adult Tyrannosaurus rex. But “world’s largest snake” is not a settled tape-measure record: researchers reconstructed Vasuki from a partial set of vertebrae, and length, thickness and mass do not produce the same winner.
What was Vasuki indicus?
Vasuki indicus is a newly named genus and species of extinct madtsoiid snake described in 2024. It lived roughly 47 million years ago, during the early Middle Eocene (Lutetian), in the region that is now Gujarat in western India. The animal is not a surviving species and poses no modern threat.
Sunil Bajpai discovered the fossil material in 2005 at the Panandhro Lignite Mine in Kutch. Later study identified the bones as snake vertebrae. The holotype and associated material include 27 pre-cloacal vertebrae, with some still articulated. Those bones are substantial evidence for a giant snake, but they do not include a complete skeleton.
How long was the giant Indian snake?
The study in Scientific Reports estimates a total body length of approximately 11–15 meters. Nature India gives a closely matching range of 10.9–15.2 meters, or about 36–50 feet. These are modeled reconstructions calculated from vertebral measurements and predictive equations, not a length measured from a complete animal. The paper describes the estimates as tentative.

At the upper end, the reconstruction is longer than many adult T. rex length estimates. That comparison is about maximum modeled body length, not overall bulk, height or weight; a snake’s body also follows a different posture from a walking dinosaur.
Was Vasuki bigger than Titanoboa?
Possibly in length, but no definitive overall-size champion has been established. The Vasuki authors write that their largest body-length estimates appear to exceed those for Titanoboa even though Vasuki’s vertebrae are slightly smaller. Titanoboa is commonly estimated at about 13 meters in the comparison literature. Both figures are estimates, so a narrow numerical lead should not be treated as a settled world record.

| Comparison | Vasuki indicus | Titanoboa | What the evidence means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Estimated length | 10.9–15.2 m (36–50 ft), modeled from partial vertebrae | About 13 m, commonly estimated | Ranges overlap; Vasuki may be longer under some models. |
| Vertebral size and robustness | Vertebrae slightly smaller than Titanoboa’s in the study’s comparison | Vertebrae may indicate a more robust body | Longer does not automatically mean thicker or heavier. |
| Mass | Up to about 1,000 kg in a modeled upper estimate reported by the Associated Press | Not stated in the evidence summarized here | The Vasuki figure is a model, not a weighed specimen. |
| Age | About 47 million years old (Middle Eocene) | Lived during an earlier Paleocene–Eocene greenhouse interval | They were separated by millions of years. |
| Geographic setting | Warm, swampy/backswamp deposits in Gujarat, India | Warm tropical South American environment | Both occupied unusually warm greenhouse climates. |
| Reconstruction confidence | Partial vertebral column; the paper calls length estimates tentative | Also reconstructed from incomplete fossils | Neither claim is a direct measurement of a complete snake. |
“Largest” therefore depends on the chosen metric. Vasuki could lead in maximum reconstructed length, while Titanoboa may have been more massive or thicker-bodied. The fossils do not establish a single winner for total size.
Where was Vasuki found?
The fossils came from lignite-bearing deposits at the Panandhro Mine in Kutch, Gujarat. The surrounding sediments represent a warm swamp or backswamp landscape. Fossils found nearby include catfish, turtles, crocodilians and primitive whales, showing that the snake lived in a diverse wetland ecosystem.

What did Vasuki eat?
No stomach contents or kill site has been reported, so the exact diet is unknown. The associated fish, turtles, crocodilians and primitive whales are plausible contemporaneous prey, but their presence does not prove that Vasuki ate any particular one.
Debajit Datta, a study co-author at IIT Roorkee, interpreted the animal as a slow-moving ambush predator that subdued prey through constriction. That is an anatomical and ecological inference, not a direct observation. The evidence supports a terrestrial or semi-aquatic lifestyle; it does not show that Vasuki was an open-water snake.

How did Vasuki fit into snake evolution?
Vasuki belongs to Madtsoiidae, an extinct family of large snakes. Phylogenetic analysis places it in a distinct clade with India’s Late Cretaceous Madtsoia pisdurensis and North Africa’s Late Eocene Gigantophis garstini.
The authors interpret that pattern as evidence for an Indian-origin lineage that dispersed between landmasses after India collided with Asia. Vasuki is therefore important not only for its size, but also for what it suggests about the movement and survival of madtsoiid snakes across ancient continents.

Why could a snake become so large?
Vasuki lived during a warm Middle Eocene interval with estimated average temperatures of about 28 °C. Titanoboa also lived during an exceptionally warm greenhouse period. Because snakes are ectothermic, warm conditions can support longer activity seasons and lower energetic costs for maintaining body temperature, making climate a useful part of the size discussion.
That pattern is not a forecast that modern warming will produce giant snakes. Vasuki’s size also depended on millions of years of evolution, available prey, habitat, competition and geography. Modern climate change is occurring on a very different timescale and within ecosystems already altered by people.
What remains uncertain about the “world’s largest snake” claim?
- The skeleton is incomplete: the reconstruction relies mainly on vertebral dimensions rather than a complete body.
- Different equations give different lengths: the published range is about 10.9–15.2 meters, not one confirmed value.
- Length is only one measure: body circumference, density and muscle mass could favor another snake.
- Fossil comparisons are uneven: Titanoboa and Vasuki were both reconstructed from incomplete remains and different anatomical datasets.
- Behavior is inferred: ambush predation and constriction fit the evidence, but no feeding event is preserved.
The most accurate conclusion is that Vasuki indicus was one of the largest snakes known and may have exceeded Titanoboa in maximum estimated length. Calling it unambiguously the largest snake ever requires assumptions that the current fossils cannot resolve.
