It was a small, meat-eating pseudosuchian—an archosaur on the crocodilian evolutionary line, not a dinosaur—that lived about 237 million years ago.
What was Parvosuchus aurelioi?
Parvosuchus aurelioi is a newly recognized member of Gracilisuchidae, a group within Pseudosuchia. Pseudosuchians include the crocodilian branch of archosaurs and their extinct relatives. The species was described in a Scientific Reports paper published on 20 June 2024.
The animal is known from a fossil specimen catalogued as CAPPA/UFSM 0412. The preserved material includes a complete skull, 11 dorsal vertebrae, two sacral vertebrae, a pelvic girdle and parts of the hind limbs. The fossil was discovered by amateur paleontologist Pedro Lucas Porcela Aurélio, whose name is commemorated in the species name.
How old was the Brazilian predator?
The fossil comes from the Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone of Brazil’s Santa Maria Formation. These rocks are associated with the Ladinian–Carnian boundary, during the Middle–Late Triassic transition. Parvosuchus lived approximately 237 million years ago, long before the familiar dinosaur-dominated ecosystems of the Jurassic and Cretaceous.
#1 Best Overall
- Replica Chirostenotes dinosaur claw – approx. 4.5 inches (11.43cm)
- Species: Chirostenotes pergracilis, Late Cretaceous (~76.5 million years ago), Alberta, Canada
- Realistic texture and anatomical accuracy – great for collectors, educators, and fossil enthusiasts
- Useful in paleontology education, museum displays, or as a unique prehistoric gift
- Display-ready fossil replica (stand not included)
How big was it?
The skull measures 144 millimetres (14.4 centimetres) in length. Comparisons with related pseudosuchians indicate an estimated total body length of about 1 metre. That figure is an informed reconstruction rather than a direct measurement, because the skeleton is incomplete.
| Animal | Approximate size | Taxonomic position | Ecological role indicated by the evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parvosuchus aurelioi | About 1 metre long; estimate based on related pseudosuchians | Gracilisuchid pseudosuchian | Small carnivorous predator |
| Prestosuchus chiniquensis | Approximately 7 metres long | Much larger pseudosuchian | Large predator in the same broader Triassic fauna |
What did it look like and eat?
The skull was long and slender, with relatively narrow jaws. Its teeth were pointed, curved backward and blade-like. That combination is consistent with a carnivorous diet and led the describing study to interpret Parvosuchus as a small predatory pseudosuchian.

- IMPRESSIVE SIZE: This replica megalodon shark tooth measures 5.5 inches, capturing the massive scale of this prehistoric predator.
- REALISTIC DETAIL: Expertly crafted to mimic the look and texture of a genuine megalodon fossil, making it a convincing display piece.
- VERSATILE DISPLAY: Perfect for home decor, office shelves, tabletops, or as a centerpiece in any fossil or nature-themed collection.
- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Made from high-quality materials designed to maintain its appearance over time without the fragility of a real fossil.
- GREAT FOR ALL AGES: An ideal piece for shark enthusiasts, fossil collectors, students, and anyone fascinated by prehistoric marine life.
Its anatomy contrasts sharply with the giant predators that also occupied the Triassic landscapes of what is now southern Brazil. The fossil record does not establish a particular prey species or hunting behavior, but the jaw and tooth design indicate a meat-eating role rather than plant feeding.
Was it a dinosaur?
No. Parvosuchus aurelioi was not a dinosaur. It was a pseudosuchian archosaur, placing it on the crocodilian side of the archosaur family tree. Dinosaurs and pseudosuchians were separate major branches within Archosauria.

Why is this fossil important?
It confirms gracilisuchids in Brazil
Before the species was described, securely identified gracilisuchid fossils were known from China and Argentina, while Brazilian material was ambiguous. Parvosuchus is the first unambiguous gracilisuchid confirmed from Brazil, extending the group’s reliable geographic record.
It adds a very small predator to the assemblage
The species is the smallest pseudosuchian reported from the Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone. Its discovery shows that the local predator community was not made up only of enormous reptiles; it included much smaller hunters with different body plans and likely different feeding opportunities.
Rank #4
It sharpens the picture of life before dinosaurs dominated
The same broad Triassic fauna included predators such as approximately seven-metre Prestosuchus chiniquensis. Finding a roughly one-metre, blade-toothed pseudosuchian alongside such giants reveals a wider range of body sizes and predatory roles than a fossil record focused only on the largest animals would suggest.
Rodrigo Müller summarized the broader significance: “Although early pseudosuchians received far less attention than dinosaurs in the pop culture, these reptiles evolved a vast spectrum of forms before the rise of dinosaurs.”

What scientists can and cannot conclude
- The formal identification is based on a single described holotype, CAPPA/UFSM 0412.
- A phylogenetic analysis places the animal within Gracilisuchidae.
- The approximately 1-metre body length is an estimate from comparisons with related pseudosuchians, not a measurement of a complete skeleton.
- The teeth support a carnivorous interpretation, but the fossil does not by itself identify specific prey or detailed hunting behavior.
