Specimens came from shallow caves, enclosed marine lakes and a reef in Ha Long Bay, where some forms grew to about 20 cm. It is a real scientific discovery, but “giant creature” and “monster” are headline language—not descriptions of a large unknown animal.
What divers found in Ha Long Bay
Cladocroce pansinii belongs to Porifera, the animal group commonly called sponges. The species was formally described in a 2023 paper in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. Researchers examined Vietnamese material collected in Ha Long Bay, including Hang Toi Dark Cave, Hang Luong Lake, Bui Xam Lake, Me Cung Lake, Hang Dui I Lake and a coastal reef.
These were shallow-water habitats rather than the deep ocean. The paper lists collection depths generally around 1–4 m, including a semi-dark tunnel at approximately 1–1.5 m. Secondary diving coverage describes pale-green to yellowish specimens with tubular or branching bodies; some reported examples reached roughly 20 cm.
Why the “giant creature” label is misleading
A 20 cm sponge can look striking to a diver, especially when it branches through a cave or grows in a cluster. It is not, however, a giant vertebrate, a newly discovered sea monster or an unidentified predator. Sponges are stationary filter-feeding animals: water passes through pores in their bodies, and cells remove food particles and oxygen from that flow.

The available reports concern a newly recognized species, not a single oversized individual. Secondary coverage referred to eight Vietnamese specimens, while the scientific paper assessed material from several sites and compared it with related museum and field specimens.
How scientists determined it was a new species
The authors used an integrative taxonomic approach. That means the species decision did not depend on appearance alone; physical anatomy and DNA evidence had to agree.

- GENTLE EXFOLIATION: Removes dirt, oil, and dead skin while helping leave skin feeling smooth and refreshed.
- IDEAL FOR FACE & BODY CLEANING: Creates a rich lather with cleansers, soaps, and body washes while being soft enough for daily use.
- ECO-FRIENDLY & NATURALLY GENTLE: This biodegradable, renewable sea sponge offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic bath sponges while remaining naturally hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin.
- SIZING: Sponges are shipped dry and may appear smaller upon arrival. Sizes are measured when the sponge is fully saturated. Simply soak in water to restore its natural size and shape.
Morphology and skeleton
Researchers documented the sponge’s external form, surface and internal skeletal features, including the types, dimensions and arrangement of its microscopic silica spicules. These characters help distinguish closely related members of the genus Cladocroce.
DNA markers
They analyzed several genetic regions—COI, 28S and the 18S–ITS1–5.8S–28S region—and applied species-delimitation analyses. The molecular results supported the morphological diagnosis of C. pansinii, rather than treating the Vietnamese specimens as variation within an already named species.

Rechecking older identifications
The study re-examined material previously labeled Cladocroce burapha. Some Vietnamese and Hawaiian specimens were reassigned to C. pansinii. That correction changes the recorded ranges of both species and demonstrates why DNA testing is valuable when related sponges share similar shapes.

Why the discovery matters beyond one bay
Correct names are essential for mapping biodiversity. If C. pansinii is recorded as C. burapha, scientists can misjudge each species’ geographic range, habitat preferences and conservation context. The reassignment of Vietnamese and Hawaiian material shows that a species thought to be widespread may actually represent multiple, more narrowly distributed lineages.

The World Porifera Database records the formal 2023 publication of C. pansinii and the related species Cladocroce lamellata. Together with the molecular analyses, that record places the Ha Long Bay finding in the broader effort to resolve Indo-Pacific sponge diversity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Ha Long Bay “monster” real?
The organism is real; the monster framing is not scientific. Divers observed a sizeable, unusual-looking sponge in shallow Ha Long Bay habitats, and taxonomists established that it represents a species new to science. Nothing in the published account indicates a dangerous animal, a moving sea monster or an animal living at extreme depth.

What remains unknown
- The reports do not establish a population estimate for C. pansinii across Ha Long Bay.
- A reported 20 cm size is an observation from secondary coverage, not a formal growth limit established for every colony.
- The available account does not provide evidence that the sponge is harmful to divers or wildlife.
