An 11-month-old dachshund named Lambo reportedly turned his living room into a foam-and-fabric “art studio” in about 10 minutes alone after tearing apart the dog-friendly steps used to reach a sofa. The February 9, 2025 report says the incident was not a one-off: in December 2024, Lambo also ripped open a wrapped Christmas present that contained another set of dog stairs.
What happened to Lambo?
Alexis Orlopp returned to find the room covered with pieces of foam and fabric from Lambo’s sofa steps. She joked that the dachshund had been “hosting an arts and crafts class.” The report described a TikTok video from @lambo_weenie as viral, recording more than 383,000 views and 45,300 likes at the time of the Indian Defence Review article’s publication; those figures are a snapshot, not a current total.
Lambo was about 11 months old when the destruction occurred. Orlopp said he had already shown the same interest in dog stairs by tearing open a December gift containing another set, adding: “He chews everything, all the time.”
Why might a young dachshund chew stairs while alone?
Chewing is common in young dogs, but the trigger can differ from one dog to another. Guidance relayed by the report from the Humane Society links destructive chewing with several possibilities:

- Teething and young-dog exploration: mouths are a primary way puppies investigate texture and relieve discomfort.
- Boredom or too little mental stimulation: an unattended dog may create its own activity from whatever is available.
- Excess energy: a dog that has not had suitable physical activity may be more likely to dismantle soft furnishings.
- Separation-related distress: destruction that happens specifically during absences can be one sign of anxiety, especially when paired with vocalizing, pacing, escape attempts, drooling or accidents.
A single incident cannot identify the cause. Use a camera, when practical, to see whether chewing begins immediately after departure, follows a period of rest, or occurs only after the dog has exhausted other activities.
How to prevent a dachshund from chewing furniture and steps
Control access before you leave
- Remove stairs, cushions, blankets, remotes and other chewable objects from the dog’s unsupervised area.
- Use a secure pen, crate or dog-proofed room only if your dog has been introduced to it gradually and remains relaxed there.
- Block access to sofas or other elevated areas if the dog stairs themselves are becoming a target.
- Inspect the room for foam, fabric, cords and small pieces that could be swallowed.
Offer legal chewing and enrichment
- Leave appropriately sized, durable chew toys made from materials intended for dogs; discard any toy that breaks into pieces.
- Rotate several safe options so they remain novel.
- Use food-dispensing toys or frozen, dog-safe fillings to provide an activity that lasts longer than a quick snack.
- Match toy size to the individual dachshund and supervise new items until you know how the dog uses them.
Meet exercise and training needs
Provide age-appropriate walks, sniffing opportunities, short training sessions and interactive play before an absence. Practice calm departures and returns rather than making leaving a dramatic event. Reward the dog for settling on a mat or bed, and teach a reliable “leave it” when you are present; training cannot make an unsafe object safe during unsupervised time, so management remains essential.

Do not punish the aftermath
Punishing a dog after you find chewed material does not show what action was wrong and may increase fear around your return. Clean up safely, prevent access to the same target, and reinforce an alternative behavior during supervised sessions.
Choosing safer dog stairs for a small, long-backed dog
The report does not identify a brand or model, and no particular product can be endorsed from this incident. When comparing stairs for a dachshund, evaluate the entire setup rather than appearance alone.

| Feature | What to check |
|---|---|
| Height and sofa reach | Measure the sofa seat and choose stairs that let the dog step on and off without a large final jump. |
| Stability | Look for a broad base, firm construction and anti-slip feet or backing; the unit should not slide or tip when the dog climbs. |
| Step dimensions | Steps should be wide and deep enough for the dog to place all four paws securely, with a rise that does not force awkward scrambling. |
| Weight capacity | Stay within the manufacturer’s stated limit, including a safety margin for an adult dachshund’s future weight. |
| Cleanability | Removable, washable covers and surfaces that do not expose loose foam make routine cleaning and inspection easier. |
| Long-backed-dog suitability | A low-impact route with controlled steps can reduce repeated jumping, but ask your veterinarian for individualized advice if your dog has back pain, weakness or a previous injury. |
Introduce new stairs while you are home. Reward one calm step at a time, secure the stairs so they cannot move, and do not leave them available unsupervised until you are confident the dog uses them rather than dismantles them.
A practical alone-time routine
- Take the dog out for toileting and provide suitable activity well before departure.
- Set up a dog-proof area with water, a resting place and one or two tested enrichment toys.
- Remove sofa steps and other tempting objects if chewing is an established habit.
- Leave quietly and monitor with a camera during short absences.
- Increase time alone gradually only when the dog remains settled.
- After returning, check the dog and room for missing pieces, damaged toys or signs of distress.
When destructive chewing needs professional help
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dachshund may have swallowed foam, fabric or another object, or shows vomiting, repeated gagging, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite or difficulty passing stool. Ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for help when destruction is accompanied by panic, escape attempts, persistent vocalizing or injuries, or when careful management and gradual alone-time training do not improve the pattern.
