Calgary artist Jeff De Boer makes one-of-a-kind miniature metal armor for cats—and mice. These are sculptures, not mass-produced pet equipment or protective gear intended for animals. Each suit is designed, fabricated and polished by hand at a scale small enough to suggest a wearable knight’s outfit.
Who makes armor for cats?
Jeff De Boer, an artist based in Calgary, began his cat-and-mouse armor series while in college. The project had been developing for nearly 30 years by the time Make profiled him in 2017, and he has continued to expand and refine the idea.
De Boer entered the work through jewelry design and metalworking. He enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1984, where techniques normally used for fine jewelry gave him the control needed to fabricate armor at miniature scale.
Are these real cat suits of armor?
They are real metal objects, but the documented work is miniature sculpture rather than a tested line of pet clothing. The suits are unique, hand-built pieces; the available account does not establish production quantities, dimensions, weight, safety testing or a retail program. Nothing in the account suggests they are meant to protect a cat in a fight or to be worn routinely.

De Boer has described the conceptual starting point this way: “In order to bring authenticity to the work, I had to build something that was real. So why not a real suit of armor for a small animal?” The physical reality of the metal is part of the artistic premise, not evidence that the pieces function as animal safety equipment.
How are the miniature armor pieces made?
Jewelry-scale fabrication
De Boer applies jewelry-making methods to tiny armor components. At this scale, forming, joining and detailing metal demand the precision associated with fine metalwork rather than ordinary costume construction.

Tools made for each suit
Every suit is treated as an individual project. De Boer makes custom tools for the particular piece, allowing him to shape and manipulate parts that standard, full-size armor tools could not easily control.
Extensive abrasive and polishing work
The bright finish is not a quick final step. De Boer says, “For every hour I spend making something, I spend an equal hour on the finishing. It’s like a science — the choice of abrasives, the polishes. The ‘why’ and ‘how’ of finishing takes years to master.”

That ratio is his description of his own studio practice, not an industry benchmark. Finishing involves selecting abrasives and polishing compounds appropriate to the metal and the desired surface, then working carefully enough to avoid rounding or damaging tiny details.
He also explains why a flawless appearance can be persuasive: “Finishing is also sometimes a bit of sleight-of-hand. You can’t make a perfect thing, but you can trick people into believing it is.” The knightly gleam therefore comes from both meticulous surface preparation and controlled visual presentation.

Why make armor for a mouse as well as a cat?
The mouse armor carries a protective metaphor alongside its technical challenge. De Boer says, “We need someone taking care of the little guy in a dangerous world,” and adds, “I feel that’s part of what the mouse armor represents.” The contrast between a powerful cat and a vulnerable mouse gives the series a story that viewers can read immediately, while the tiny metal construction keeps the idea grounded in an object you can see and examine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a maker learn from the process?
- Scale changes the tools. Small parts require controlled, purpose-built tooling rather than simply miniaturizing full-size equipment.
- Surface work is structural to the appearance. The metal gleam associated with a knight depends on abrasive selection, polishing compounds and patient finishing.
- Unique work resists simple specifications. Because each suit is custom-made, the documented account provides no standard size, weight, price or performance figure.
- Material authenticity can serve an idea. Real metal armor makes the protective metaphor tangible without turning the sculpture into a claim about practical pet protection.
Could you buy one for your cat?
The 2017 account does not document a mass-market product, Amazon listing, standard order process or current gallery referral for these suits. Treat photographs of De Boer’s work as documentation of one-of-a-kind art, not as an invitation to fit a pet with untested metal equipment. A cat’s comfort, movement, skin and breathing would require professional animal-safety evaluation before any wearable object could responsibly be considered.
