Once the collar feels routine, fit the tracker according to its model instructions and keep checking for signs of discomfort.
Choose a cat-safe collar and check the fit
Use a collar made for cats with a breakaway or quick-release mechanism. Check that it works as intended and that the tracker and its mount will not prevent the collar from releasing. Follow the collar maker’s fitting instructions: a common check is to leave room for about two fingers beneath the collar while ensuring it cannot easily slip over your cat’s head. Trim excess strap only if the collar design calls for it.
Introduce the collar in small steps
Let your cat investigate
Choose a quiet moment and place the collar near your cat. Let them sniff or explore it without pressure. Familiar scent may help: Ontario SPCA suggests rubbing a cloth along the cat’s face and then on the collar, or placing the collar near familiar bedding. Reward relaxed interest with a treat or reassuring words. Pheromone spray is an optional aid mentioned by the organization, not a required part of training.
Practice brief, positive wear
When your cat seems relaxed around the collar, put it on gently for a short session. Offer a reward for calm behavior, then take it off before your cat becomes overwhelmed. Repeat daily and extend the sessions gradually, guided by your cat’s comfort rather than a fixed schedule. Ontario SPCA’s collar-training guidance recommends a calm introduction and gradual practice.

Add the tracker after the collar feels comfortable
Wait until your cat is tolerating the collar before adding the device. Attach the tracker using the instructions for that exact model; mounting positions and compatible collars can differ. Confirm that the mount does not interfere with the breakaway mechanism, and recheck the fit once the tracker is attached.
For example, Tractive’s CAT 6 Mini setup guide specifies mounting the tracker on top of the collar, keeping a snug fit with room for two fingers, and increasing wear time gradually. Those directions apply to that model, not necessarily to other trackers. The guide also notes that initial location can take a few minutes while the device connects to GPS satellites and cellular networks.

Watch your cat and adjust the routine
Pay attention to behavior as well as collar fit. Repeated scratching or pulling, persistent discomfort, or irritation around the neck are reasons to remove the setup and reassess it. Do not force the collar or punish your cat for resisting. If physical problems or discomfort persist, consult a veterinarian.
- Check the fit regularly, especially after attaching or repositioning the tracker.
- Pause training if your cat is distressed, then try again later with a shorter session or a simpler step.
- Follow the tracker maker’s current size, weight, collar and mounting guidance for your specific model.
Adjustment time varies by cat; Tractive describes it as ranging from days to weeks in its collar-training article. No universal safe tracker-weight threshold for all cats is established by the sources cited here, so seek individualized veterinary advice if you are unsure whether a particular device is suitable.

A GPS tracker is not an electronic containment collar
A GPS tracker is intended to help locate a cat. It is different from an electronic collar that delivers stimulation to contain or train an animal, so instructions for stimulation collars should not be applied to a passive location tracker. Agriculture Victoria’s electronic-collar code concerns those stimulation devices and applies in Victoria; it is not general training guidance for GPS trackers.
