Both use GPS and a mobile network and require a subscription. An AirTag or similar Bluetooth tag works differently: it can help locate a cat when nearby phones detect it, but it is not an equivalent replacement for live GPS tracking.
The right choice depends on your local network coverage, your cat’s comfort in the collar, battery needs and ongoing cost. None of these devices guarantees that you can always find a cat or prevent them from wandering.
What counts as an alternative to Fi Mini or Tractive?
First decide which locating system you need. A cellular GPS tracker calculates location using satellites and sends it through a mobile network. That can support remote location updates, but depends on GPS reception, cellular coverage and battery charge. The service generally requires a subscription.
A Bluetooth tag instead broadcasts a short-range signal. Nearby compatible devices may detect it and relay a location. Its usefulness therefore depends on whether such devices are nearby; it does not provide the same kind of independent, cellular-connected tracking. The Associated Press quoted Tractive executive vice president Andrew Bleiman saying Bluetooth is “a totally reasonable solution if you’re in a downtown urban core”—a conditional use case, not a promise of dependable tracking everywhere.

- HEALTH, SLEEP & ACTIVITY MONITORING: Stay on top of your cat’s wellness with daily insights into their sleep and activity. Get notified of unusual changes so you can act early.
- VIRTUAL FENCES AND LOCATION HISTORY: Set safe zones and get alerts if your cat leaves. See where they’ve been and activate live tracking to find them fast. Ideal for outdoor cats, curious explorers or late-night wanderers.
- LIGHTWEIGHT, WATERPROOF AND BUILT FOR CATS: Weighing just 0.9 oz, Cat Mini is made for cats 6.5 lbs and up. Waterproof, rugged and designed to stay on. Battery lasts up to 5 days, extended further with Power Saving Zones
- HISTORY & TERRITORY - KNOW YOUR CAT’S ROAMING HABITS: See where your cat spends most of their time with weekly-updated territory maps. Based on repeated movements, it’s perfect for understanding their routine and exploring behavior.
For a cat that may roam beyond familiar streets, compare GPS trackers first. A Bluetooth tag may be a supplementary finder, especially in places with many nearby phones, but should not be treated as a live-GPS substitute or a safety boundary.

Not equivalent to cellular GPS for remote live tracking. |
These weights, dimensions and battery figures are manufacturer specifications or estimates, not results of head-to-head testing. Battery life depends on settings and use; the two manufacturers describe different power-saving conditions, so their estimates are not a direct comparison.
Weenect XS: a compact GPS alternative
Weenect XS is the clearest alternative in the available manufacturer specifications for someone seeking a small cellular GPS tracker. Weenect lists a 27 g device measuring 60.5 × 24.5 × 15 mm. Its US product page estimates up to 7 days with Wi-Fi power-saving zones or 2 days with continuous tracking, and lists IP68 water resistance.

The tracker has an integrated SIM and requires subscription activation. Weenect describes supported US networks, but a listed network does not establish coverage at your cat’s actual roaming locations. Check coverage and current plan terms for your area before choosing it.
Tractive CAT 6 Mini: a current Tractive cat model
Tractive CAT 6 Mini is useful as a current comparison point if you are looking beyond an older or differently sized Tractive option. Tractive lists the tracker at 25 g, or 32 g with its integrated collar, and gives dimensions of 95 × 20 × 13 mm. Its stated battery life is up to 7 days with Power Saving Zones.
Tractive describes GPS/LTE location, cellular network partners and subscription tiers. Its product information also describes health and activity functions, though available features depend on the exact model and subscription. Check the current plan details for your country rather than assuming every feature is included in every tier.

How to choose for your cat
Check coverage where your cat actually goes
Cellular GPS needs a working mobile connection to send location. Coverage can vary between neighborhoods, buildings and rural areas. Before buying, check the maker’s coverage information and network requirements for the relevant country and confirm that the service suits the places your cat is likely to roam. A tracker can only report what its GPS and network connections allow.
Judge the complete collar, not just the tracker
Compare the device’s weight and dimensions, and account for the collar or attachment your cat will wear. Tractive’s figures distinguish the CAT 6 Mini tracker from the tracker plus integrated collar; that difference matters when evaluating the full worn setup. Introduce any collar carefully and confirm that the particular model fits your cat safely and comfortably. A tracker that is too bulky or poorly fitted may not be a practical choice, whatever its features.
Match battery expectations to your tracking habits
Frequent or continuous updates can use more power than a setup that relies on power-saving zones. Weenect’s own estimate distinguishes Wi-Fi power-saving zones from continuous tracking; Tractive’s estimate is stated with Power Saving Zones. Treat both as conditional manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Consider how often you can recharge the unit and what its battery status or low-charge alerts let you monitor.

Compare the subscription over the time you expect to use it
Both Weenect and Tractive require subscriptions for their cellular trackers. Plan prices and terms vary by market and can change, so compare the current options in your country and calculate the total cost for your intended ownership period, including the device and recurring service. A Bluetooth tag may avoid a cellular-tracker subscription, but its different locating method makes that a trade-off, not a like-for-like saving.
Decide whether activity or health features matter
Tractive advertises activity and health features for some models and subscriptions. Verify that the specific CAT 6 Mini plan available to you includes the functions you want. Do not assume that a tracker’s activity data is a veterinary diagnosis or a substitute for a veterinarian’s advice.
What a tracker can—and cannot—do
A GPS tracker can help you locate a cat when the device has power and the required positioning and network connections are available. A geofence or boundary alert, where offered, is a notification feature, not a physical barrier: it cannot keep a cat in a yard or prevent them from getting into danger. The Associated Press quoted Bleiman describing strong connectivity in most of Europe and North America, with an exception for very remote places such as the middle of a national park; that statement is not a guarantee of coverage at every address or roaming location.

A dense urban area may offer more opportunities for detection than a sparse or remote one, but neither circumstance guarantees a successful location update. If your cat goes missing, follow the tracker maker’s guidance and use ordinary search and identification measures as well; no tracker can promise recovery.
