1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a cat GPS tracker by checking, in order, whether its network works where your cat roams, whether the complete tracker-and-collar setup fits comfortably, how long its battery lasts in the tracking mode you expect to use, and what the device plus required service will cost over the same period. Cellular GPS trackers need mobile coverage to send locations; Bluetooth crowd-network tags depend on compatible nearby phones and are a different kind of trade-off. No coverage map, battery estimate, or virtual fence guarantees that a cat can be found or kept in a particular place.
How does a cat GPS tracker send you a location?
A cellular GPS tracker has two jobs: determine its position and send that position to your phone. In Tractive’s description, its tracker uses GPS to locate a pet and a built-in SIM to transmit location data over partner mobile networks; a subscription activates that service. If cellular coverage is weak or absent, delivery of location data can be delayed until the tracker reconnects. Tractive explains how its tracking and reporting work.
That means “GPS coverage” is not just a question of whether the device can receive positioning signals. The tracker also needs a compatible mobile network to report the position. Check the exact model’s supported service in your country and the areas your cat is likely to visit, including indoor or rural places where signal may differ. Tractive’s current pages describe service in countries with 2G and/or LTE Cat M1 from partner networks; its US page names Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile among partners. These are product- and region-specific claims, not a guarantee of service at a particular home or yard. Tractive UK product information and Tractive US product information set out their respective coverage details.
Cellular GPS versus Bluetooth tags
Bluetooth crowd-network tags, such as AirTag-style devices, send a low-power signal that nearby compatible smartphones can relay. They can be useful when those phones are around, but they do not provide the same kind of cellular connection as a GPS tracker with mobile service. The Associated Press describes the distinction and notes that Bluetooth range varies by model; a broad range estimate is not a dependable radius for locating a roaming cat. The Associated Press’s guide to pet-tracking technology provides context.

Update frequency is not the same as guaranteed delivery
For Tractive, default tracking updates are described as roughly every ten minutes while a pet is moving, and less often while it is relaxing or asleep; Live mode can update every two to three seconds. These figures describe Tractive’s modes, not every tracker. Even a frequent update setting depends on the device being able to communicate with a network.
How should you compare battery life?
Compare battery claims only when the tracking conditions are similar. A manufacturer’s “up to” figure is a conditional estimate, not an independent test or a promise of typical runtime. Power-saving zones, how often live tracking is used, and the strength of GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile signals can all affect consumption. A device may use more power when it is working harder to determine or send its position; some conserve power when a pet is in a safe zone. The AP also notes that battery performance varies with signal and tracking behavior.
| Model | Manufacturer battery claim | Condition attached to the claim |
|---|---|---|
| Tractive CAT Mini | Up to 5 days | With Power Saving Zones, according to Tractive’s Help Center |
| Tractive CAT 6 Mini | Up to 7 days | With Power Saving Zones, according to Tractive’s Help Center |
| Weenect XS | Up to 7 days, or 2 days of continuous tracking | Seven-day claim uses Wi-Fi power-saving zones; figures are Weenect’s published claims |

Think about the mode you would actually use if your cat went missing. If you expect to run live tracking continuously, a battery claim based on power-saving zones is not the relevant comparison. Plan to charge the device regularly and check what the manufacturer says about runtime in the mode you intend to use.

What size and weight should you look for?
Compare the whole worn setup, not only the tracker’s bare weight. Length, shape, attachment, collar weight, and where the device sits on the neck all affect the package your cat wears. Manufacturer measurements help narrow options, but they do not establish comfort for every cat.
| Model | Published weight | Published dimensions | Size guidance or fit note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tractive CAT Mini | 25 g | 55 × 28 × 17 mm | Tractive guidance says for adult cats weighing at least 3 kg |
| Tractive CAT 6 Mini | 25 g for tracker; 32 g with integrated collar | 95 × 20 × 13 mm | Tractive guidance says for adult cats weighing at least 3 kg; assess the integrated collar setup |
| Weenect XS | 27 g | 60.5 × 24.5 × 15 mm | Weenect’s cited US product information does not state a minimum cat weight |
Sources: Tractive Help Center and Weenect XS product information. Specifications and manufacturer guidance can change. Before buying, check that your cat meets the model’s stated size guidance and confirm how the tracker attaches to a suitable collar. A listed weight does not tell you whether a particular cat will tolerate the shape or fit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you compare subscription costs fairly?
Some cellular trackers require an active subscription because location data is sent over mobile networks. Tractive says its built-in SIM and mobile service are activated by subscription and that every Tractive tracker requires an active plan. Plan features can also differ: its comparison pages describe options such as family sharing, worldwide coverage, and longer location history. Check which features the cat’s owner actually needs before comparing plan prices.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, add the device’s purchase price to every required subscription charge over the same ownership period. Include any longer billing commitment you would have to pay upfront, then compare plan features such as location history or sharing. The AP reports that some pet-tracking subscriptions may cost $100 or more per year; that is broad context, not a current quote for any particular model.
What can a virtual fence do—and what can’t it do?
A virtual fence can send an alert when a tracker detects that a pet has left an area set in the app. It does not form a physical boundary or prevent a cat from leaving. Andrew Bleiman, Tractive’s executive vice president for North America, told the Associated Press that a tracker is “not going to keep your pet in the backyard” and will only alert the owner when the pet leaves the selected virtual-fence area. Treat the alert as a notification, not containment.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before choosing
- Network: Verify the exact model’s supported networks and service in your country and the places your cat roams; a coverage map cannot confirm signal at an individual building or yard.
- Fit: Compare dimensions and the full tracker-plus-collar weight, then check the manufacturer’s cat-size guidance and attachment compatibility.
- Battery: Match runtime claims to the tracking mode you expect to use, especially live tracking versus power-saving zones.
- Total cost: Add device price and required service charges for the same period; check local billing terms and the features included in each plan.
- Safety expectations: Treat Bluetooth relays as dependent on nearby compatible devices and virtual fences as alerts, not barriers.
