The best place to start cleaning your dog’s teeth is a daily brushing routine with a soft-bristle toothbrush. VOHC-accepted chews, diets and other oral-care products can supplement brushing, but their accepted claims differ by product—and none can diagnose or treat dental disease below the gumline.
What counts as a dog tooth cleaner?
“Tooth cleaner” can mean a toothbrush, chew, dental diet, water additive, gel, toothpaste or wipe. These products have different roles: brushing physically cleans tooth surfaces, while other options can help retard plaque or tartar as part of preventive care. Home products are maintenance, not treatment for established periodontal disease.
The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) recommends daily home dental care from an early age. It describes daily brushing as the gold standard for preventing plaque and calculus (tartar) and slowing periodontal disease. The cheek-facing surfaces of the upper teeth are especially prone to plaque and tartar buildup, so give them particular attention when brushing.
How the main options compare
The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) dog-products list separates products by category and records whether each accepted claim concerns plaque, tartar, or both. The examples below reflect the list identified as last updated in May 2026; listings can change, so confirm a product and its claim on the current list before buying.

VOHC acceptance is product- and claim-specific. VOHC says it reviews data submitted by companies against its standards; it does not itself test products. Its seal may indicate acceptance for plaque, tartar, or both. It is not a universal ranking, and the list does not establish which option will suit every dog.
How to choose a product for your dog
- Make brushing the anchor. Choose a soft-bristle toothbrush that lets you reach the cheek-facing upper teeth comfortably. Build toward daily brushing.
- Check the exact claim. If choosing a VOHC-listed product, verify the current dog list and whether that specific item is accepted for plaque, tartar, or both. Do not assume all listed chews or additives address both.
- Match chews to your dog. Follow the package directions and choose the correct size for your dog’s weight range. A chew that is too large or too small is not the right fit simply because it appears on the list.
- Consider the product’s role and availability. Dental diets may be consumer-available or veterinary-only; prescription diets should be discussed with your veterinarian. Treat additives, chews and diets as supplements to—not replacements for—brushing and veterinary care.
Why clean-looking teeth do not rule out dental disease
Periodontal disease affects structures that support the teeth, including gum tissue and bone, and it can progress below the gumline. A tooth may look clean on its visible surface while disease is developing out of sight. The AVDC notes that bad breath or loose teeth may not appear until substantial damage has occurred; white teeth alone do not show that a dog’s mouth is healthy.

Scraping visible tooth surfaces while a dog is awake cannot provide a complete oral examination or the care that may be needed below the gumline. The AVDC’s position statement, adopted in April 2024, says: “Anesthesia-Free Dentistry (AFD) is not a replacement for comprehensive dental procedures that are performed under anesthesia.”

A comprehensive veterinary dental procedure can include examination, probing, full-mouth intraoral radiographs, scaling below the gumline, polishing and treatment of disease found during the procedure. The AVDC says a complete oral examination is not possible in an unanesthetized patient, so hidden disease or discomfort can be missed. Home care belongs alongside periodic veterinary examinations and professional scaling under anesthesia when indicated—not in place of them.
