Let your dog find the odor, then reward right beside it. As your dog catches on, move from a simple hand-held exercise to a container on the floor and finally to an easy hide at home. You can try the game with household items; a kit or class is optional.
What scent training teaches
Scent training, also called scent work or nose work, gives your dog a particular odor to locate and a way to show you where it is. Your role is to set up the search and reward the find—not to steer your dog toward the answer. For a first home exercise, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends building from odor recognition to a simple container search (AKC’s home scent-work guide).
What you need to start
You can begin without buying a complete kit. In its home-training instructions, AKC suggests a cleaned mint tin with holes as a starter scent vessel. Its supply list also includes birch essential oil, cotton swabs, tweezers, a small lidded glass jar, disposable gloves, high-value treats, and a lidded plastic container with holes. These are items in AKC’s suggested setup, not universal requirements for every way of playing scent games.
AKC’s separate beginner guide to AKC Scent Work supplies discusses kits and individual supplies. A kit can be convenient, but household items may be enough to try the basic exercise. In AKC’s sport, paper-stem cotton swabs are required, and birch is the first odor taught; those are AKC-specific details, not rules for all scent-work methods.

Prepare the odor carefully
Set up the odor away from the area where you will train. AKC advises using gloves and tweezers to handle odor materials, keeping the target odor separate from other items, and sealing away anything that contacted the odor in a bag kept away from the training location. The aim is to keep the search odor distinct rather than accidentally spreading it around the room.
AKC’s instructions describe a training method; they do not establish veterinary exposure limits or show that essential oils are safe for every dog. Do not let your dog lick or chew the odor materials. If you have concerns about a particular product or your dog’s health, ask your veterinarian before using it.

Teach your dog to recognize the odor
- Present the odor and reward separately. Hold the odor vessel in one hand and a treat in the other, about a foot apart.
- Wait for your dog to investigate the odor. When your dog chooses the odor hand rather than the treat hand, mark the behavior with your usual marker, such as a click or a brief word.
- Reward at the odor. Give the treat next to the odor vessel so the dog associates finding the target with the reward at its source.
- Switch hands. Repeat with the odor in the other hand. Changing sides helps teach the odor itself, rather than a fixed hand position.
In its guide, AKC suggests progressing after three correct identifications in a row, each within a few seconds. Treat that as a benchmark from that particular guide, not a universal training rule. If your dog is unsure, make the exercise easier and give them more opportunities to succeed.
Turn recognition into a search
- Put the vessel in a perforated container. Repeat the recognition exercise so your dog learns to find the odor through the container.
- Set the container on the floor. Start between your feet, then let your dog investigate and reward at the odor source.
- Make an easy hide. Once your dog can find the floor container readily, have the dog wait elsewhere while you place it on the floor in the room.
- Bring your dog in to search. Give the dog room to work out where the odor is, and reward the find at the source.
Change one thing at a time: for example, make the hide less visible only after your dog understands the current setup. If the search becomes difficult, return to a more obvious placement rather than pointing out the answer.

- TEN POUCHES, NOT SIX — Ten breathable mesh scent pouches, about 4 inches square, with a woven handle tag your dog can carry — enough to hide three, four or five at a time so the game keeps getting harder.
- REAL ANISE, SEALED INSIDE — Each pouch holds food-grade aniseed in a sewn inner sachet — the liquorice note dogs lock on to. Nothing is sprayed on the fabric; reseal them between games to keep the scent strong.
- FIVE GAMES, EASIEST FIRST — The printed guide starts where your dog is: let them sniff one, hide it in plain sight, say "find it". It builds to room hunts, garden searches and dragged scent trails. No clicker needed.
- TEN MINUTES BEATS AN HOUR OF WALKING — Scent work tires a dog mentally in a way exercise alone does not. Works on carpet, grass, soil or snow, in a flat, a hallway or a back garden.
- A SNIFFING TOY, NOT A CHEW TOY — Double-stitched seams and tag, machine washable in a laundry bag, built for searching rather than shredding. Play supervised and take the pouch back once it is found.
Play at home or look for a class
Home games are a practical way to begin; you do not need to enter a competition. AKC describes organized scent work with container, interior, exterior, and buried searches, as well as handler discrimination. These are elements of its sport program, not prerequisites for a beginner. Its Getting Started in Scent Work guide points to local clubs and training facilities for people who want instruction.
A class can help if you want coaching or a structured setting. NACSW’s trial-readiness guidance asks handlers to consider how their dog responds to unfamiliar stimuli in search areas, and the organization directs people to education and certified-instructor resources. Search locally for a scent-work or nose-work class; availability depends on your area.

Common beginner questions
Do I need a scent-work kit?
No. A kit is optional for trying the home exercise. AKC’s home guide describes a cleaned mint tin with holes as one possible starter vessel; its separate supplies guide covers kits and individual items. If you choose supplies, treat them as tools for the method you plan to follow rather than a universal checklist.
Does scent training have to use birch?
Birch is the first odor taught in AKC Scent Work, according to AKC’s supplies guide. That does not make it mandatory for every scent game or training organization. Choose a method and follow its instructions for the target odor and handling materials.
