Before planning outings, take new behavior or mobility changes seriously and discuss them with your veterinarian.
First, find out why your cat’s mobility or behavior has changed
Older cats may show discomfort in small ways: jumping onto a favorite perch less often, avoiding stairs, grooming differently, or becoming unusually withdrawn or irritable. Reduced jumping or climbing can be associated with degenerative joint disease or muscle weakness, while behavior changes can have medical causes. Do not assume that a change is simply part of aging.
AAHA’s senior-care guidance summarizes studies indicating that more than 60% of cats have osteoarthritis in at least one joint, even when it is not obvious on examination: AAHA senior-care guidelines. Separately, the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guideline reports published estimates that 40–92% of cats may have clinical signs associated with degenerative joint disease; the wide range reflects the studies it cites, and it is not the same measure as the osteoarthritis figure: 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline senior-care guidelines.
AAHA advises: “Senior cats exhibiting new or unusual behavior should be evaluated for medical conditions.” Share what you notice at home with your veterinarian. The FDA likewise emphasizes that observations of a cat’s activity and behavior help the veterinarian understand its overall health: FDA: Feline osteoarthritis.

Is a stroller a good alternative to a first leash walk?
It may be, if your cat accepts the enclosure and seems at ease. A stroller can let a caregiver take a cat outside without requiring the cat to walk on a leash, but it does not remove the need for supervision or make an outing suitable for every cat. Some cats may find the movement, sounds, unfamiliar smells, or confinement unsettling.
AAHA/AAFP guidance supports providing a safe, stimulating environment and identifies supervised outdoor access—including leash walks and secure enclosures—as options. It does not say that all cats want or tolerate outdoor outings. A veterinary-practice article mentions cats arriving at a clinic in strollers, which shows that the product category is in use, but does not establish comparative safety or identify a best model: Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery veterinary-practice article.

How to introduce a stroller without rushing your cat
There is no cited clinical protocol for stroller acclimation. A cautious approach is to let your cat investigate a familiar carrier or the stroller indoors first, then consider a very brief, quiet, supervised outing only if the cat appears comfortable. Keep the outing optional; do not push through signs of distress.
- Start indoors. Place the familiar carrier or stroller where your cat can approach it freely. Let the cat explore at its own pace.
- Try a short, quiet outing only if the cat is settled. Choose a calm setting and keep the outing brief and supervised.
- Stop if your cat seems distressed. Return to a familiar, quiet place rather than extending the trip. If you are unsure whether the behavior reflects fear, pain, or another problem, contact your veterinarian.

- Enclosure: Does it close securely, and can you check that your cat stays contained?
- Ventilation and space: Is there adequate airflow and enough usable room for your cat to settle comfortably?
- Entry: Can your cat get in without a difficult climb or awkward lift, given its mobility?
- Loading and unloading: Can you move your cat calmly without creating a stressful struggle?
- Stability: Does the stroller feel steady on the routes you expect to use?
- Everyday handling: If relevant to your home, can you fold, store, and clean it conveniently?
For a product comparison, verify details such as interior space, entry height, stability, fold dimensions, and ease of cleaning against current manufacturer specifications and independent evidence. Do not treat a product description alone as proof of safety or performance.

Outdoor access is only one possible quality-of-life consideration. Senior-cat guidance also discusses home adjustments and accessories such as ramps, suitable litter-box designs, rugs or yoga mats for better footing, and appropriate beds.
