Brief, intermittent paw twitches, small kicks, paddling, or a quiet yip while your dog is asleep are usually normal and may happen during dreaming. A twitch alone does not mean your dog is having a seizure. But forceful or prolonged movements, trouble rousing your dog with your voice, or unusual behavior afterward call for veterinary advice.
Why do dogs twitch in their sleep?
Dogs have REM sleep, and movement or vocalization can accompany it. A sleeping dog may twitch its paws, kick briefly, paddle, or whimper. These behaviors are commonly associated with dreaming, but you cannot tell from a movement what a dog is dreaming about.
VCA describes the idea that dogs dream about ordinary experiences as a belief held by scientists and psychologists, not something an owner can verify by watching a dog sleep. Puppies and senior dogs are reported to twitch more than middle-aged dogs; the explanation that movement inhibition during REM is less developed in puppies or less efficient in older dogs remains a theory, not an established mechanism. VCA notes that a first dream episode for an average-sized dog often begins about 20 minutes after falling asleep, but that is only an approximate generalization—not a timing test. How can I tell ordinary twitching from a possible seizure?
No checklist can diagnose a seizure at home. Look at the whole episode—how the movement looks, whether your dog responds to your voice, and how your dog acts afterward—and contact a veterinarian if you are concerned.

AKC chief veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein says dream-associated movements are often brief—less than 30 seconds—and intermittent. That description is not a diagnostic cutoff: a longer twitch does not by itself prove a seizure, and duration alone cannot distinguish one. Seizures can happen during sleep, and a focal seizure may appear as repeated twitching limited to an eyelid, lip, or ear. A localized movement should not automatically be dismissed as a dream. What should I do while my dog is twitching?
- Keep your hands away. Do not touch or startle a sleeping dog; involuntary bites or scratches can happen. If you need to wake your dog, call its name or make a sound instead. Once it wakes, reassure it gently. AKC guidance on dogs twitching in their sleep
- Observe from a safe distance. Note what the movement looks like, how long it lasts, whether your dog responds to your voice, and how it behaves afterward.

When should I call a veterinarian or seek emergency care?
- Call your veterinarian about suspected seizures, violent or unusually forceful sleep movements, prolonged or rigid episodes, movements that also occur while your dog is awake, or an episode where your dog cannot be roused by sound. Contact the clinic as well if there is elimination during the episode, drooling, or confusion afterward. These are warning signs, not a way to confirm a diagnosis.
- Seek emergency veterinary care for an ongoing seizure lasting more than five minutes. Forceful sleep movements that propel a pet or make it run into walls also warrant a veterinary discussion. Some unusual sleep movement disorders can resemble seizures, so a veterinarian should assess what is happening rather than relying on appearance alone.
