Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) reported rescuing 146 animals from an overcrowded Rutherford County, Tennessee, property in May 2026. The total included 133 Chihuahuas, one large dog and 12 cats. Called Operation Little Dogs, Big Hearts, the rescue unfolded in two stages; ARC said the animals would receive veterinary care and rehabilitation before placement with shelter and rescue partners.
What happened in the Rutherford County rescue?
ARC said family members contacted the organization because the elderly residents at the property could no longer care for the animals and needed to leave the home. The organization described severe overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, including feces accumulated on the floor. ARC also said the animals had been moved to an outdoor pen, where they were showing increased stress and aggression, and asked that no more animals be moved outside while it organized a full response.
ARC Executive Director Tim Woodward described the urgency: “From the moment we arrived, it was clear these animals were in crisis. Our priority was getting the most vulnerable animals to safety as quickly as possible while ensuring those remaining could be rescued humanely and responsibly as soon as possible.”
These circumstances and conditions are ARC’s account of the property and its response. ARC’s May 18, 2026, press release reported the overall rescue total and animal breakdown.
