Nominations for the 2027 Chewy Veterinary Leaders Program close November 4, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST. AAVMC plans to select 15 second-year veterinary students for scholarships of $20,000 each, paid to their institutions for Fall 2027. Students cannot nominate themselves: a U.S. AAVMC Institutional Member must put them forward, with a dean’s letter. Check AAVMC’s application portal for current eligibility details and submission instructions.
What the 2027 scholarship offers
The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) says the program plans to select 15 students, each slated to receive $20,000. The scholarship is paid directly to the student’s institution for the Fall 2027 semester. Taken together, those published figures imply a nominal cohort value of $300,000; AAVMC does not present that product as a separate total.
The program also includes development opportunities beyond the scholarship:
- Monthly conversations facilitated by MentorVet.
- An in-person leadership summit at Chewy’s Florida headquarters.
- A six-month mentorship and professional-development curriculum after graduation.
- Membership in the Chewy Veterinary Leaders alumni network.
AAVMC’s January 2026 announcement said $900,000 had been awarded through the 2026 cohort; that historical figure is not the 2027 cohort’s award total.

Who can be nominated
AAVMC’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes the intended candidates as second-year veterinary students from backgrounds with limited access to veterinary careers who have shown interest in developing leadership skills. This is a high-level description, not a complete eligibility checklist. The announcement does not enumerate every qualification or all required application materials, so confirm the current cycle’s details in the AAVMC application portal.
Institutional nomination is required. Each U.S. AAVMC Institutional Member may nominate one eligible student, and the nomination must include a dean’s letter. The portal advises students to confirm that their institution has nominated them before proceeding.
How to pursue a nomination
- Check institutional eligibility and availability. Ask your veterinary school whether it is a U.S. AAVMC Institutional Member and whether it plans to nominate a student. Each eligible member institution has one nomination.
- Confirm that your school is nominating you. A student cannot self-nominate; the institution submits the nomination.
- Work with your school on the dean’s letter. This letter is part of the nomination. Check with the institution about its internal process and timing.
- Review the current portal instructions. Use AAVMC’s application portal for the full current-cycle eligibility details, required materials, and submission steps. Do not rely on older-cycle requirements unless the portal confirms them for 2027.
- Meet the cutoff. Nominations close November 4, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST, according to the portal. Contact your institution well before the deadline so its nomination process can be completed in time.
Choosing between this program and the Lowrie scholarship
AAVMC’s awards page says a student cannot be nominated for both the Chewy Veterinary Leaders Program and the Patricia M. Lowrie Organizational Health Scholarship. If your institution is considering either nomination, compare each award’s current eligibility, focus, terms, requirements, and timing before deciding. The Chewy program’s broad description does not establish the Lowrie scholarship’s criteria; consult AAVMC’s awards information for current details.
