Sam Beeson, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Oncology), is an assistant professor in the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine’s oncology service, according to a faculty spotlight published October 2, 2026. His path to veterinary oncology began with a very different plan: he entered veterinary school expecting to become an equine ambulatory veterinarian, then changed direction during a fourth-year oncology rotation.

Education and veterinary training

Beeson grew up in Minnesota and earned his bachelor’s, DVM, and PhD degrees at the University of Minnesota, according to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine’s October 2, 2026, faculty spotlight.

He then completed a small-animal rotating internship at North Carolina State University, followed by a medical-oncology residency at Colorado State University. The spotlight identifies him as an assistant professor in the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine’s oncology service as of its publication date.

How Beeson chose veterinary oncology

Beeson began veterinary school expecting to work as an equine ambulatory veterinarian. During an oncology rotation in spring 2020, his plans changed: he decided oncology was the career he wanted and shifted his remaining rotations toward the small-animal hospital.

“I wish I had a better explanation other than to say that I just knew right away that it was what I wanted to do with my career.”

That account describes a personal career decision, rather than a general recommendation about choosing a veterinary specialty.

Clinical priorities and research interests

Beeson says he is focused in the clinic on improving patient care, safety, and outcomes. He also identifies cancer genetics and precision medicine as his research interests. The spotlight does not describe specific studies, publications, laboratory projects, or treatment recommendations.

A favorite case from residency

When asked about a favorite case, Beeson recalled a Doberman with osteosarcoma whose owners took part in a clinical trial during his residency. He described the case as a meaningful connection with the patient and owners. The spotlight does not name the trial, describe its protocol, report an outcome, or offer treatment guidance, so the anecdote should not be read as evidence for a particular therapy.
