When no mother appeared, the pup was taken to Monterey Bay Aquarium for care. Aquarium-attributed material later identified her as Pup 719 and dates the rescue to January 6, 2016, at Carmel Beach.
Why rescuers searched the beach
In a 2023 retelling, IHeartDogs says an employee heard cries while walking, found a baby sea otter alone, and carried her along the shore in the hope that her mother would respond. The search did not reunite them, so the pup was brought to an aquarium. The story’s associated video is credited to Monterey Bay Aquarium. IHeartDogs’ account recounts the beach scene; it is a later retelling, not contemporaneous reporting.
Who was Pup 719?
A Sea Otter Channel archive reproduces translated excerpts attributed to Monterey Bay Aquarium and identifies the pup as Pup 719. Those excerpts place her discovery at Carmel Beach on January 6, 2016, during stormy conditions. Staff searched for her mother and, when they could not find her, took the pup to Monterey Bay Aquarium for intensive care. The archive’s translated account is the source for that specific date, location, and care chronology.
The aquarium-attributed material says she was the program’s 719th rescued otter since 1984. That figure is reported in the translated reproduction; it should not be treated as a verified verbatim statement from the original aquarium publication.

Why she later moved to Shedd Aquarium
Reuniting a stranded pup with her mother is different from raising her with a surrogate otter for possible release. The translated aquarium material says Monterey Bay Aquarium had no surrogate available for Pup 719, while Shedd Aquarium in Chicago could provide a long-term home. She was transferred there rather than returned to the wild.
The 2023 IHeartDogs retelling compresses the beach rescue and later transfer into one narrative. Its account of the pup’s cries helps explain the scene’s human appeal, while the translated archive supplies the more specific chronology and placement explanation.
