A 2017 social-media account says Hurley, described as a pit bull–Lab mix, ran toward a child’s scream and grabbed a copperhead. But the child left before Hurley’s family could identify him or learn whether he had been bitten. The story does not establish that the child was bitten—or that Hurley definitively saved him.
What the account says happened
A secondary article published July 13, 2017, attributed the story to Stacie Rae English, who reportedly posted it on Facebook on July 9. In the account reproduced by that article, English’s brother was walking Hurley at about 10 p.m. when they heard a young child scream. Hurley ran toward the sound, and the brother saw him grab and fling a copperhead. Read the July 2017 account.
The reproduced post describes Hurley as a pit bull–Lab mix; it does not establish that he was a purebred pit bull. It says the child got into his mother’s vehicle and left before the family could identify him.
Was the child bitten?
The account does not confirm a bite. It says: “We are assuming because they left so fast that he was bitten and being rushed to the ER.” That sentence is explicitly the family’s assumption, not a reported medical finding. The available account does not establish whether the child was bitten, went to an emergency room, or needed treatment. See the later retelling.

Did Hurley survive?
According to the reproduced family account, Hurley had two puncture wounds in his upper lip. The post says he was taken to Denton Animal Emergency Hospital and kept overnight for blood-clotting checks, then returned home the next morning with swelling and discomfort. These are the family’s reported details; the reporting does not include independently reviewed veterinary records. The 2017 article reproduces the account.
Was the incident officially confirmed?
The available reporting traces the story to the family’s social-media post, repeated by later publishers. It does not provide independent official confirmation of the incident.
