9 Reasons Your Cat Inspects Everything You Bring Home

Cats investigate new things for overlapping reasons, from unfamiliar smells and textures to play and hiding. Here’s how to make that curiosity safer.

Your cat may inspect a new bag, box, or object because it brings unfamiliar smells and textures into a familiar space—and because investigating, batting, or hiding in things can be enjoyable. There is no single proven motive behind every inspection, and the explanations below can overlap. Most ordinary sniffing is simply curiosity; the practical priority is making sure the new item is safe.

Why does my cat sniff everything I bring home?

Cats use their senses to explore their surroundings. A newly arrived object offers new information, but watching your cat sniff or paw at it does not reveal exactly what the cat is thinking. These are plausible, overlapping reasons—not nine separate motives established for every cat.

1. It carries unfamiliar smells

A package or purchase may carry odors from a shop, another home, people, animals, or its packaging. Cats are sensitive to odors, and changes in the scent environment can matter to them. That does not mean every inspection is a territorial check or an attempt to claim the object. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines discuss the importance of the cat’s sensory environment.

2. The texture is new

Cardboard, paper, fabric, and other materials feel and sound different under a paw or nose. A box in particular gives a cat a new combination of texture and smell to investigate, as veterinary behaviorist Alison Gerken explains in PetMD’s overview of why cats like boxes.

3. Exploring helps cats learn

Investigation is a normal part of development and exploration. VCA Animal Hospitals describes the need to investigate new objects and environments as an important part of young animals’ development in its guidance on kitten play and investigative behavior. Adult cats may also show interest in what has changed in their surroundings.

4. The object invites play

A light or crinkly item may prompt pawing, chasing, or pouncing. Cats often direct play toward objects that move or can be batted around. If your cat starts treating an unsafe household item as a toy, redirect play to an appropriate toy rather than encouraging contact with the item.

5. A box offers a place to hide

An open box can create an enclosed spot where a cat can retreat or rest while still keeping an eye on the room. Gerken describes this safe-space appeal as one possible reason cats are drawn to boxes. A box is not guaranteed to appeal to every cat, and a cat may use it differently from another.

6. It can feel like a small den

The walls of a box can make a curled-up resting place feel sheltered. Gerken also notes that a box may help contain warmth. This is a box-specific possibility, not an explanation for why a cat sniffs every bag or household purchase.

7. Your cat may leave scent on it

A cat that rubs its face against a box may leave scent on its sides, according to Gerken. Scratching can also deposit scent: the Cornell Feline Health Center notes that cats have scent glands on their paws. These behaviors are normal communication and investigation, not proof that a cat is carrying out a deliberate ownership ritual. See Cornell’s guidance on destructive behavior.

8. A changed environment may be unsettling

New objects and odors change the familiar home environment, and changes in household odor may contribute to stress for some cats in some circumstances. The AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidelines discuss new objects in the context of possible urine marking, but an inspection by itself is not evidence that a cat is distressed or marking. Look at the rest of the cat’s behavior rather than treating sniffing as a diagnosis: AAFP/ISFM Guidelines for Diagnosing and Solving House-Soiling Behavior in Cats.

9. Your attention may make the object more interesting

If you pause to watch, talk to your cat, or move the item while it investigates, the interaction can become part of the experience. This is a plausible way an inspection may turn into a shared play moment; it does not establish that attention explains every cat’s interest. Let the cat investigate safe items without forcing contact.

How to let your cat investigate safely

Curiosity is normal, but household objects are not automatically safe toys. Before leaving an item within reach, remove packaging, ties, string, small detachable pieces, toxic materials, and anything that could be swallowed or toppled. Do not use a plastic bag as a hiding place or play tunnel.

For more on normal investigation and ways to direct play safely, see VCA’s play and investigative behavior guidance.

If your cat scratches the new item

Scratching is normal behavior and can deposit scent from glands in the paws. Instead of punishing the cat, provide an acceptable scratching surface and match it to what the cat already prefers.

  • Notice whether your cat scratches vertically or on a horizontal surface.
  • Choose a sturdy post or scratcher with a surface that suits that preference.
  • Place the scratcher where the cat is likely to use it, then redirect calmly if the new item attracts scratching.

The Cornell Feline Health Center describes scratching as normal investigation and play that can be managed with an appropriate plan and patience.

Optional ways to add enrichment

A cat that enjoys investigating may also enjoy short interactive play sessions or a food puzzle. These are optional outlets, not purchases required to address an ordinary inspection habit. The AAFP Feline Behavior Guidelines recommend puzzle feeders and interactive toys as enrichment options. If using food or treats, account for them in your cat’s daily food ration.
