“National Feral Cat Awareness Month” is a useful October theme for learning how to help outdoor cats, but the sources reviewed do not establish an official national month-long observance by that name. Alley Cat Allies identifies National Feral Cat Day as October 16, created by the organization in 2001. Its purpose is to raise awareness, promote trap-neuter-return (TNR), and encourage action for community cats.

The most practical way to help is to connect with an established local animal-welfare group or veterinary provider before acting. They can explain local procedures and services, and help ensure that trapping, veterinary care, and ongoing monitoring are coordinated.

What is a community cat?

A community cat is generally an unowned, free-roaming outdoor cat. Some are unsocialized and avoid people; others may be friendly. They may have a regular caregiver who provides food or monitors their welfare, but not every community cat does. The ASPCA distinguishes community cats from owned outdoor cats, which are not included in its definition.

Because a friendly cat may be lost or owned, do not assume that every cat outdoors is unowned. If you are unsure, ask a local shelter or animal-welfare organization how to check for an owner and what procedures apply in your area.

What is TNRM?

Trap-neuter-return, often expanded to trap-neuter-return-monitor (TNRM), is a humane management approach for community cats. Cats are humanely trapped, taken for veterinary spay or neuter surgery and vaccination, and returned to the outdoor location they know. A veterinarian or program typically marks a sterilized cat with an eartip so caregivers can recognize that it has been treated. Caregivers may then monitor the group, provide food, water or shelter, and watch for new arrivals or welfare concerns.

The ASPCA supports locally tailored humane approaches and identifies TNRM as its preferred approach when the goal is to decrease a community-cat population. It emphasizes planning and sustained activity; TNR is not an immediate fix, and the results depend on local conditions and continuing program work. Alley Cat Allies describes the core TNR steps, while the ASPCA discusses adapting and monitoring programs in its position statement.

What makes a TNRM program effective?

The ASPCA gives a program benchmark: sterilize at least 75% of cats in a group within six months, then sterilize at least 75% of the remaining intact cats. It presents this as a benchmark that can help stabilize a group and reduce numbers over time—not a guarantee that every program or neighborhood will have the same outcome.

Geography, climate, food availability, other animals, existing programs, cultural norms, and local resources can all affect decisions and results. The ASPCA recommends planning and monitoring, and says relocation should be a last resort. Ill or injured cats, cats causing serious nuisance problems, and very young orphaned kittens may need a different pathway; seek local animal-welfare or veterinary guidance rather than assuming routine TNR is appropriate in every case.

How can you help community cats?

Choose an action that fits the cats’ needs and the capacity of local programs. The right approach varies by neighborhood; there is no universal ranking of ways to help.

How you can help What it involves Best first step
Support organized TNR or clinics Assist an established program with sterilization, vaccination, education, or other coordinated activities. Ask a local TNR group, shelter, animal-control office, or veterinary clinic about its current needs and protocols.
Support a caregiver Help provide appropriate food, water, or outdoor shelter, and support regular observation of the group. Find out whether the cats already have a caregiver or program so help can be coordinated.
Take part in outreach Share accurate information and help neighbors learn about humane community-cat management. Use guidance from an established local organization; local rules and services vary.
Help a socialized cat Check whether a friendly cat is owned or lost, then follow appropriate local rescue or reunification steps. Ask a local shelter or animal-welfare group how to check for an owner and what to do next.

Alley Cat Allies lists organized TNR, vaccination, education, and appropriate outdoor care among examples of activities associated with National Feral Cat Day. Its observance page can help explain the day’s purpose; local groups can tell you what activities are available nearby.

What should you do if you see a community cat?

  • If the cat seems healthy: Avoid assuming it is abandoned. Ask a local shelter or animal-welfare group how to check for ownership and whether a community-cat caregiver or TNR program is active nearby.
  • If the cat appears sick or injured: Contact a local animal-welfare organization, animal-control office, shelter, or veterinary provider for guidance. The right response can depend on local procedures and the cat’s condition.
  • If you are considering trapping: Coordinate with an experienced local group and confirm the veterinary destination and timing first. Humane trapping is one step in a process that includes veterinary care and return; do not trap without a plan for what happens next. Alley Cat Allies provides guidance on trapping community cats.

Why recognize National Feral Cat Day?

Alley Cat Allies created National Feral Cat Day in 2001 and observes it on October 16 to promote awareness, TNR, and action for community cats. An October activity may be organized by a local group, but that does not mean every community follows a single national month-long calendar. Use the date as an opportunity to learn what is happening locally, support responsible programs, or help neighbors understand humane options.
