Stress can trigger the body’s fight-or-flight response; relaxation techniques aim to encourage a different, calmer response. They may help, but no exercise works instantly or reliably for everyone.
Why pressure can affect your body and attention
When a situation feels threatening or demanding, the body can activate a fight-or-flight response. Relaxation practices are intended to counter that activation by eliciting a relaxation response. This general mechanism does not mean an exercise will resolve the situation itself, or every person’s reaction to it. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, guided imagery, biofeedback and self-hypnosis as relaxation techniques.
What you can try in a demanding moment
Use gentle breathing as an anchor
If it feels comfortable, pause and notice your breathing. Let your breath remain gentle rather than forcing deep or rapid breaths. Paying attention to the breath can give your mind one simple focus while you respond to the situation. If concentrating on breathing feels uncomfortable, stop and choose another anchor, such as noticing your feet on the floor or naming a few things you can see.
Try focused attention or a guided practice
You can direct attention to a steady, neutral detail around you, or use a guided imagery or progressive relaxation exercise when the setting allows. Some practices are easier with spoken guidance; others can be done quietly on your own. Choose an approach that feels manageable rather than treating any one method as the correct response to pressure.

Practise outside the high-pressure moment
Breathing or relaxation practice may be more useful as a skill you return to than as a guaranteed emergency fix. The evidence review of breathing interventions linked better outcomes with guidance, repeated sessions and longer-term practice; it also associated more effective interventions with avoiding fast-only breathing and sessions shorter than five minutes. Those are findings across reviewed interventions, not a prescription or assurance for an individual situation.
What the evidence says about breathing practices
Evidence suggests breathing practices may reduce stress for some people, but the results depend on the intervention and the outcome measured.

- A 2023 meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials involving 785 adults reported a small-to-medium association between breathwork and lower self-reported stress compared with control conditions. Most included studies were assessed as having moderate risk of bias. Read the meta-analysis.
- A separate 2023 systematic review examined 58 studies and reported that 54 of 72 breathing interventions were effective on the measured stress or anxiety outcomes. The count reflects that review’s criteria and mix of study populations and interventions; it does not mean 54 techniques are proven to work for everyone. Read the systematic review.
- A review of brief interventions found inconsistent results for breathing practices alone, underscoring that a quick exercise is not a dependable cure for acute anxiety. Read the review of brief interventions.
- NCCIH describes evidence for diaphragmatic breathing as preliminary: its summary of a 2019 review notes three studies with 880 participants. Read NCCIH’s stress guidance.
Taken together, these findings support trying a practice if it suits you, while keeping expectations realistic. Reviews report average or study-level effects, not certainty about what will help one person in one specific moment.
Choosing a practice that fits the situation
| Approach | What it involves | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-guided breathing | Using gentle breath awareness without equipment or spoken guidance. | When you can pause briefly and focusing on breathing feels comfortable. |
| Guided imagery or progressive relaxation | Following spoken or written prompts to focus attention or relax the body. | When you have enough privacy and time to follow guidance. |
| Biofeedback | Using feedback about physiological signals to guide practice. | When structured feedback is useful; a consumer device is not established as necessary. |
No approach is established here as definitively best. Practicality, personal comfort and whether you can practise repeatedly matter alongside the method.

Do you need a class, book or device?
No purchase is required to begin. NCCIH says, “Most relaxation techniques can be self-taught and self-administered.” Some techniques may need only brief instruction from a book or an experienced practitioner, so a book can be an optional learning aid rather than a requirement. NCCIH’s relaxation-technique overview also discusses biofeedback, but that does not establish that a consumer device is needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When relaxation practice is not enough
Relaxation techniques should not replace conventional care or postpone a visit to a doctor about a medical problem. NCCIH advises using them as complementary practices, not substitutes for appropriate medical attention. See NCCIH’s safety guidance.
