Veterinary technicians may take patient histories and vital signs, collect and process samples, assist with imaging and surgery, administer veterinarian-directed treatments, monitor anesthesia and recovery, care for hospitalized animals, and help clients understand care at home. The exact mix changes with the practice, patients, credentials, and local rules—these are examples, not a universal weekly schedule.
What a veterinary technician’s week can include
The examples below span common areas of veterinary practice, from a patient’s first assessment through treatment, recovery, and communication with the care team. A technician may do many of them in one week, but not necessarily all of them; duties and permitted procedures vary by workplace and jurisdiction.
Patient assessment and diagnostics
- Triage patients and gather information about the reason for the visit.
- Take a patient history, asking about appetite, behavior, medications, and symptoms.
- Measure temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and other vital signs.
- Collect blood samples.
- Run or assist with laboratory work, such as blood testing, urinalysis, and cytology.
- Label and prepare samples for outside laboratories, then document their handling.
- Take diagnostic radiographs.
- Use hands-free radiology techniques to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure.
- Assist with ultrasound by positioning the patient, operating equipment, or collecting samples.
- Take dental radiographs.
Treatment, anesthesia, and surgery
- Prepare patients, rooms, instruments, medications, and monitoring equipment for surgery.
- Calculate and prepare medications as directed by a veterinarian.
- Administer oral, injectable, topical, ophthalmic, and other medications as permitted.
- Place intravenous catheters.
- Administer and monitor fluid therapy.
- Help prepare for and induce anesthesia when credential and supervision rules allow.
- Monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, ventilation, temperature, and anesthetic depth.
- Recognize patient changes and promptly communicate them to the veterinarian.
- Prepare instruments, maintain a sterile environment, and assist the surgical team.
- Monitor postoperative recovery, including comfort, vital signs, mobility, appetite, and surgical sites.
Nursing, pain care, wounds, and dentistry
- Assess pain using behavior, body language, vital signs, and pain-scoring tools.
- Carry out and monitor veterinarian-directed pain-management plans.
- Change bandages.
- Clean, dress, photograph, measure, and monitor wounds, alerting the veterinarian to changes.
- Scale and polish teeth.
- Perform some dental extractions only where allowed by the state practice act and the technician’s credential, under veterinary supervision.
- Explain oral-health prevention and home monitoring to clients.
- Support nutrition plans and explain veterinarian-prescribed feeding recommendations.
- Help place and maintain feeding tubes where permitted, administer nutrition, and monitor tolerance.
- Provide inpatients with medication, diagnostics, feeding, mobility assistance, monitoring, comfort, and reassessment.
Emergency care and careful observation
- Support emergency stabilization, including oxygen therapy, IV access, medication, and continuous monitoring.
- Participate in CPR, including compressions, ventilation support, and veterinarian-directed treatments.
- Notice subtle shifts in breathing, appetite, posture, or behavior.
- Help nervous pets feel safer through thoughtful handling and adjustments to their environment.
Client communication and teamwork
- Explain treatment plans in clear, practical terms.
- Show clients how to give medication at home.
- Support families dealing with serious diagnoses, difficult decisions, and end-of-life care.
- Mentor students and colleagues.
- Continue education and hands-on training.
- Connect people, information, technology, and patient needs across the care team.
What varies from one veterinary technician job to another?
Veterinary technicians may work in private clinics, animal hospitals, laboratories, or research-related settings. A general practice, emergency service, specialty hospital, or laboratory can have a different balance of patient care, diagnostics, client communication, and support for veterinarians or scientists. The patient population and employer’s workflows also shape the week.
In the United States, technicians typically complete a two-year associate degree in veterinary technology, while credentialing requirements vary by state. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that work may be physically or emotionally demanding and can include evenings, weekends, or holidays. These details describe U.S. career context, not requirements or schedules everywhere.

Which duties can a veterinary technician perform?
Veterinary technicians work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The AVMA says they cannot diagnose, prescribe, perform surgery, or do activities prohibited by a state veterinary practice act. In practice, credentials and local law determine which procedures are permitted and what supervision is required. That is why tasks such as dental extractions or feeding-tube placement need explicit qualifications rather than being assumed to be part of every technician’s role.
For U.S. career context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $47,380 for veterinary technologists and technicians in May 2025. It projects 9 percent employment growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 13,400 openings per year on average over that period. These figures describe the occupation, not how often technicians perform any particular weekly task.
