For UK farmers, working-dog insurance may sit within a farm policy or be bought as specialist cover. It can insure a named dog against death after an accident or disease, and some policies also cover theft, veterinary costs or permanent loss of working ability. None of these benefits is automatic: the schedule, certificate and policy wording determine what applies.
What working-dog insurance may cover
Policies can cover different risks, so distinguish the event that triggers payment from the costs or losses the policy actually pays for.
- Death or humane destruction: A mortality section may pay if a specified dog dies or is put down in circumstances the wording covers. In Victor’s UK Multi Cover Agriculture wording v11, dated 1 October 2023, the working-dog section covers qualifying death or slaughter following an accident or disease, subject to its terms. - Theft: Some policies include theft, but it should be expressly included as an insured event. Farmers Weekly’s UK explainer notes that theft must be a named peril in the policy it discusses. Farmers Weekly explains working-dog cover.
- Veterinary fees: Some cover pays eligible treatment costs, often subject to a separate limit and conditions. This is not the same as death cover.
- Loss of use: A policy may pay if a dog permanently cannot perform its farm duties, but this benefit is separate from a death benefit and may have its own definition and exclusions.
- Replacement or related expenses: Check the wording rather than assuming it pays for a replacement dog, boarding or other costs. These benefits are not established as standard by the cited policy examples.

What the cited policy examples actually say
These examples illustrate why cover cannot be assumed across insurers or countries. The Australian and New Zealand terms below are not UK cover recommendations; farmers outside the relevant country should check locally available wording.

- Is the dog insured at all? Victor says its schedule shows whether the mortality section applies. ARGIS makes its Farm Working Dogs section part of the policy only when it appears on the certificate. Check that the individual dog is specified where required.
- Does the policy recognise the dog’s actual work? Confirm that the dog’s use qualifies as farming or on-farm work. The ARGIS wording excludes certain death when the dog was being used for a purpose other than farming.
- Are age, health or treatment restrictions relevant? The ARGIS example excludes dogs under six months or over nine years and includes restrictions involving certain surgery, inoculation and specified infectious or communicable diseases. Check your own policy’s definitions and exceptions.
- Are pregnancy, infertility or inability to work excluded? Victor’s cited mortality section excludes claims arising from pregnancy or parturition and does not cover permanent infertility, impotence or inability to serve. Do not assume mortality cover also insures loss of use.
- Is the event covered during the relevant period and in the right place? Check territorial limits, when an illness must be contracted, the policy period and any post-expiry reporting or event window. Victor’s 30-day post-expiry provision is specific to its wording.
- What valuation, excess and sublimits apply? Compare the scheduled sum insured with the valuation basis, and look for per-dog caps, veterinary sublimits and any excess. Victor’s cited payout is limited to the lower of market value and scheduled sum insured; ARGIS uses fair market value up to the certificate amount and caps its cited veterinary extension at $500.
- What must you do when making a claim? Check notification deadlines and required evidence. ARGIS’s wording calls for prompt notice, information about the cause and the dog’s identity, and retention of the body if requested.
How to compare a farm policy with specialist cover
Use the same questions for each quote or policy so a low premium or a broad label such as “working dog cover” does not conceal a gap:
- List the outcomes you need covered: death, humane destruction, theft, treatment bills, permanent loss of use, replacement and any other specific expense.
- Check eligibility and identification: Verify the dog is named or otherwise meets the policy definition, and that its work and location qualify.
- Compare what a claim is valued against: Establish whether payment is based on market value, a scheduled amount or another basis, and identify the maximum per dog and any veterinary sublimit.
- Map time and territory: Check when the insured event must happen, where it must happen, and any reporting or post-expiry provisions.
- Read exclusions against your circumstances: Review age, pre-existing condition, illness, pregnancy, non-farming work, treatment and inoculation clauses.
- Check claim obligations and other costs: Identify the excess, notice deadline, evidence required and whether boarding, replacement or related expenses are actually included.
- Verify the final documents: Confirm the selected section is shown on the current schedule or certificate and ask the insurer or broker to clarify any ambiguous wording in writing.
Which documents to check before relying on cover
Read the current full policy wording alongside the schedule or certificate: the wording defines terms, limits and exclusions, while the schedule or certificate shows which sections and insured amounts apply to your dog. A product webpage or a general description cannot confirm that a benefit has been selected for a particular policy.

The cited Farmers Weekly explanation was published on 11 July 2018. It identifies loss of the animal, loss of use and veterinary bills as comparison points, but its discussion of historical veterinary-fee limits is not a current market statistic. Ask for current terms rather than using old figures to estimate what today’s policies provide.
