Choose flea and tick prevention with your veterinarian, then use only a product whose label specifically covers your pet’s species, life stage, and weight. Read the full label and package insert each time, follow the directions exactly, and watch your pet after application. There is no single product type or treatment schedule that is right for every animal or location.

How to choose a flea and tick product

Start by asking your veterinarian which option fits your pet’s health, other medicines, and the parasites common where you live. The FDA strongly recommends veterinary involvement, especially for pets with health conditions. Tell the veterinarian about any medicines or other flea and tick products your pet receives.

Products come as oral pills or chews, collars, sprays, dips, shampoos, powders, and topical spot-ons. Some are prescription or veterinarian-only; others are sold over the counter. Their ingredients, coverage, directions, and eligibility differ, so products that share a format are not automatically interchangeable. Compare the exact product label for:

  • Whether it is intended for your pet’s species and life stage.
  • The weight range it covers.
  • Whether it covers fleas, ticks, or both.
  • How it is given and how often, as stated on the label.
  • Warnings relevant to your pet’s health or other medicines.
  • Whether treated animals can be kept apart until a topical product dries.

Ask a veterinarian before treating an old, weak, sick, medicated, pregnant, or nursing pet, or one that has reacted to a pesticide product before. EPA’s owner guidance and the FDA’s safe-use guide provide core precautions.

Check the label before every use

Read the full label and any accompanying package insert, even if you have used the product before. Use only the amount and schedule specified for that animal. Never use a dog product on a cat or a cat product on a dog, and do not treat a puppy or kitten unless the label specifically allows it. A product intended for the home or yard must not be applied directly to an animal.

Follow the label’s application and handling directions, including any instructions about gloves, handwashing, bathing, or keeping children and other animals away. Keep the product packaging and label so you can refer to the directions and incident-reporting details if a problem occurs.

Keep other pets and people safe during application

In a home with several pets, apply sprays and spot-ons to one animal at a time. Keep treated pets separated until the product is dry, particularly when a cat might groom a dog treated with a dog-only product. This reduces the chance of another animal ingesting product while grooming.

  • Wash your hands after application, or wear protective gloves if the label directs you to do so.
  • Store products away from children, food, and objects that could go into a person’s mouth.
  • Follow any additional precautions on the product label to limit contact with treated animals.

When to start prevention

Timing depends on where you live and your pet’s circumstances. Flea season varies by location, fleas can persist year-round in a warm home, and ticks occur year-round in some places. The FDA describes starting flea prevention at the beginning of flea season as a general approach, but advises owners to ask a veterinarian about the best time frame for their pet. Do not treat a nationwide calendar as a substitute for local advice.

For puppies and kittens too young for a labeled product

Do not use a flea or tick product unless its label permits use for that animal’s age and weight. For puppies and kittens too young for an eligible product, the FDA recommends using a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs and a tick remover to remove ticks. Flea combing can help suppress adult fleas, but these tools do not replace veterinary advice about prevention.

What to do if your pet seems ill after treatment

Stop and contact a veterinarian promptly if your pet becomes ill after a flea or tick product is used. The FDA lists possible signs including wobbliness or dizziness, incoordination, poor appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, and seizures. Keep the package and label available so you can tell the veterinarian exactly what was used and follow its incident-reporting instructions.

If a collar appears to cause a reaction, remove it. EPA advises bathing with mild soap and plenty of water after an adverse reaction; the FDA says a veterinarian may recommend bathing depending on the product. Do not assume a reaction can be managed at home: get veterinary advice, particularly for severe symptoms or seizures. EPA and FDA direct owners to report problems to the agency identified on the label.

Ask about isoxazoline products if your pet has a relevant medical history

The FDA has reported potential neurologic adverse events with certain products in the isoxazoline class. The agency says these products remain safe and effective for the majority of animals, while advising veterinarians to review each pet’s medical history and decide with owners whether a product in the class is appropriate. Discuss your pet’s history with a veterinarian rather than assuming the class is either risk-free or unsuitable for all pets. See the FDA’s safety communication.

If you have a rabbit, ferret, reptile, or another non-dog, non-cat pet

EPA says it has no flea and tick products marketed specifically for reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, and other furry pets. Ask a veterinarian familiar with your animal before using any product; do not assume a dog or cat treatment is appropriate.

Who regulates flea and tick products?

In the United States, EPA regulates many flea and tick products as pesticides, while FDA regulates some as animal drugs. EPA says its pesticide review includes human-health and ecological risk assessments and review of companion-animal safety data. An EPA overview describes a joint EPA–FDA whitepaper released in February 2023 that proposed an updated approach to clarify oversight and transfer oversight of some products. That overview does not establish that every element of the proposal has taken effect. Read EPA’s regulation overview for its explanation of the agencies’ roles.
