Yes, a mobile veterinary service may vaccinate a pet at home, but “mobile vet” can also mean a roving vaccination team or a temporary clinic where owners bring their animals. Confirm the service model, coverage area, veterinary oversight, local requirements, and what records you will receive before arranging care. The veterinarian must decide which vaccines your pet needs and whether the animal and setting are suitable.

What does “mobile vet” mean?

The label covers different ways of delivering veterinary care. A service may visit one household, travel through an area to vaccinate pets, or set up a temporary clinic at a community location. A mobile clinic is not necessarily a door-to-door house call.

Service model What to expect
Individual home visit A veterinary professional comes to your home for an appointment. Ask whether the visit includes an examination and which vaccines are available.
Roving vaccination team A team travels through a planned area, potentially visiting households or stopping at designated locations. India’s government rabies guidance describes house-to-house teams and mobile street plans as program approaches; these are examples, not universal rules for private services. Government of India rabies guidance
Pop-up or mobile clinic The clinic operates temporarily at a set location, and owners may need to bring their pets there. For example, Miami-Dade County describes a free mobile veterinary clinic with monthly locations and walk-in service. This is an example of a clinic model, not a home-visit service. Because availability and coverage depend on the provider and locality, ask where the service operates, whether you need an appointment, and whether it serves your address before relying on it.

Who can vaccinate a pet, and which vaccines are due?

Rules vary by jurisdiction. In the United States, CDC guidance says: “Animal rabies vaccines should only be administered by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision, in compliance with local laws.” The CDC also notes that rabies vaccine schedules depend on the product and state, and that local laws can affect timing. Check the requirements where you live rather than assuming another state’s or country’s schedule applies. CDC, “Information for Veterinarians,” July 16, 2025

There is no single vaccination schedule that fits every pet. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises owners to work with a veterinarian on an individualized schedule. Protection varies by vaccine: evidence indicates that some vaccines protect beyond a year, while others may not provide a full year of protection. Do not assume that every vaccine is due annually. AVMA vaccination guidance

Share your pet’s previous vaccination history with the veterinarian and ask which vaccines are due for that animal. If you are seeking a rabies vaccine for your dog, the veterinarian can assess the record and explain the applicable local requirements and timing.

How to check whether a mobile service is suitable

A convenient location does not remove the need for clinical judgment. Ask how the veterinarian will assess whether your pet is well enough for vaccination, and what alternatives are available if the home or temporary clinic setting is unsuitable.

Off-site care can involve conditions that differ from a veterinary clinic. Victoria’s veterinary regulator advises practitioners to consider added risks when procedures are performed in a mobile clinic, off-site, or during a house call, including whether the variable setting can meet animal-welfare and human-safety needs. This is regulator guidance for Victoria, Australia, not a universal legal rule, but it highlights practical questions for any location. What records should you get after vaccination?

Ask for the official vaccination documentation and keep it with your pet’s medical records. Government campaign guidance in India calls for an updated animal health booklet or vaccination certificate as proof of vaccination. Documentation practices may differ elsewhere, so ask what certificate or record the provider issues and what details it contains. Government of India rabies guidance

Bring any available vaccination and deworming history to the appointment; AVMA recommends this for new dog owners visiting a veterinarian. Share the updated history with future veterinary providers. A personal record book can help organize dates and documents, but it should not replace the official certificate or record issued by the veterinary provider. AVMA new-dog checklist

Is mobile vaccination common?

Mobile veterinary care is one option, but the available usage figure is historical and does not measure vaccination visits specifically. The American Veterinary Medical Association reported that 2.5% of U.S. dog-owning households used a mobile facility or van for routine or preventive care in 2016. In the same survey, 67% used a veterinary clinic, hospital, or veterinarian who made house calls; provider types could overlap. These figures describe reported 2016 behavior, not current use or the share of pets vaccinated by mobile services. AVMA Sourcebook
