Age alone does not explain a new change in your pet. Slowing down may accompany aging, but a persistent or worsening change in movement, appetite, sleep, behavior, or bathroom habits can also signal pain or illness. Note what changed and when, and contact your veterinarian rather than assuming it is simply old age.
Why a change in routine deserves attention
“How do I know whether my aging pet’s behavior changes are just part of getting old?” There is no reliable way to answer that from age alone. A change in behavior can be an early sign of pain, illness, or degenerative disease, and subtle shifts may be easier to spot at home than during a brief clinic visit. VCA explains why senior-pet behavior changes matter.
Look at the pattern, not just one symptom: when it began, whether it is getting worse, and whether other routines have changed too. These observations help your veterinarian decide what to investigate; they do not diagnose the cause.
Signs that may point to pain or a physical problem
Movement and comfort
In older dogs, trouble rising or settling, limping, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, avoiding slippery floors, or lying down to eat or drink can be reasons to ask about pain. They do not prove arthritis or any particular condition. VCA’s guide to recognizing pain in aging dogs describes these kinds of mobility changes.

Appetite, drinking, elimination, and other physical changes
Report changes in how much your pet eats or drinks, how often they urinate, whether they can eliminate comfortably, and any weight or activity change. In senior dogs, VCA’s senior dog care guidance also lists signs such as incontinence, changed stool, skin or coat changes, new lumps, coughing, panting, and tremors. These are observations to discuss, not a checklist for diagnosing your pet.
Behavior changes to watch for, including in older cats
Confusion or disorientation, wandering, increased vocalizing, altered sleep, repeating actions, anxiety, irritability, reduced interest in play, and house soiling are among the behavior changes the AVMA identifies as possible signs of cognitive dysfunction. They can have other explanations, so a behavior change should prompt a conversation rather than a diagnosis at home.

For cats, changes can be especially easy to miss because they may hide signs of illness. Reduced grooming, hiding, altered eating or sleeping, more meowing, litter-box changes, or difficulty reaching favorite places are worth mentioning to your veterinarian. Cornell’s guidance for senior cats emphasizes that physical or behavior changes should not simply be written off as age.

If possible, compare with what is normal for your pet and bring relevant history to the appointment. Cornell notes that a medical and behavioral history, along with comparison of weight and body condition over time, can help assess an older cat.
What a veterinary visit may involve
Your veterinarian may ask about the timeline and pattern, examine your pet, and recommend laboratory screening or other tests based on the individual animal and signs. Not every symptom calls for the same tests, and there is no single screening schedule that fits every senior pet.

Treat them as support for access and comfort, not as treatment for an unexplained change. New mobility difficulty still warrants veterinary discussion.
