Yes. Bears can get into locked cars by breaking windows, bending vehicle frames, opening camper shells, or opening car doors. A lock is sensible basic security, but it does not make a vehicle bear-proof. The safest approach is to follow the food-storage rules for the specific park or area where you are parked.
How bears get into cars
National Park Service guidance describes bears breaking vehicle windows, bending car frames, and opening camper shells to reach food. Great Smoky Mountains National Park also warns that bears can open car doors. Yosemite National Park says bears may investigate anything that smells or looks like food.
These examples show what bears can do; they do not establish how likely a break-in is at a particular parking spot or which car models are more vulnerable. The cited park guidance does not provide a general break-in rate or identify a vehicle as bear-proof.
What to do with food and scented items
Use the current instructions for the park or area where your car is parked. Rules differ by destination, so one park’s storage directions should not be treated as universal.

Follow the local storage rule
For example, Yosemite allows food in a car or truck only during daylight, out of sight, with every window completely closed; it says not to store food in a vehicle after dark and directs visitors to food lockers. Other NPS areas have different arrangements, including requiring use of lockers where they are provided. Check the destination’s official guidance and use a bear-resistant trash receptacle for garbage.
Remove overlooked attractants
Think beyond meals. Yosemite lists drinks, canned goods, cosmetics, toiletries, soaps, trash, coolers—even empty ones—and unwashed cooking or eating items as potential attractants. Clear wrappers and crumbs from the vehicle, including around baby seats. Under Yosemite’s guidance, do not leave food in a pickup bed or strapped to the outside of a vehicle.

Why proper storage matters
A bear that gets human food can learn to seek it near people. That can create risks for visitors and the bear, so secure storage protects wildlife as well as your vehicle and belongings. NPS explains the management context in Managing Human-Bear Interactions.

In Yosemite, bear-resistant canisters are required for overnight wilderness hikers, and the park describes them as the only effective and proven method there to prevent bears from getting human food. A canister is for applicable wilderness food storage; it does not protect a parked car or replace a food locker or local storage rules.
