Put your snake in a secure, ventilated carrier suited to its size, keep the trip as short as practical, and avoid temperature extremes. For an adult, one established option is a securely tied cloth bag inside a ventilated plastic tub; for a hatchling, the RSPCA describes a ventilated plastic container lined with soft absorbent paper. Ask the receiving clinic for instructions tailored to your snake and journey.
Choose a secure carrier that fits your snake
The carrier must stay closed during the ride, provide ventilation and prevent escape. There is no universal carrier dimension: choose one appropriate to your individual snake, and check that the lid or closures remain secure when the carrier is moved.
For a hatchling
For kingsnake hatchlings, the RSPCA describes a ventilated plastic container lined with soft absorbent paper. This is species-specific guidance, not a rule established for every young snake. RSPCA kingsnake transport guidance.
For an adult
The RSPCA recommends placing an adult kingsnake in a tightly secured cloth bag, then putting the bag inside a well-ventilated plastic tub. A cloth bag is an inner restraint, not a substitute for a secure outer carrier. The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) gives broader reptile guidance that also describes a box or securely tied cloth bag inside a second box, which can provide insulation. Keep the temperature safe without risking burns
Avoid exposing the carrier to very hot or cold conditions, and keep it out of direct sunlight. The Northern Territory government gives that advice in its general snake-care guidance; it is not a species-specific temperature prescription. Northern Territory Government snake-care guidance.
Whether extra warmth is appropriate depends on the snake, its health and the journey. The RSPCA says a heat pack may be needed but warns against overheating. The RVC suggests a heat source such as a hot-water bottle or microwavable bean bag, while cautioning that the reptile must not be able to lie directly on it and burn itself. Veterinary-nurse guidance likewise recommends insulating warming devices from the reptile. Ask the clinic what to use for your situation; do not put a heat source in direct contact with the snake or assume one target temperature suits every species. RSPCA, RVC and Today’s Veterinary Nurse.

Reduce stress during the trip
- Keep the journey as short as practical. The RSPCA specifically advises minimizing transit time to reduce stress.
- Secure the carrier so it does not shift, and limit avoidable noise and vibration.
- Do not repeatedly open the carrier to check on the snake; arrange containment before leaving and let the clinic know when you arrive.

Coordinate with the veterinary clinic
Before setting out, ask the receiving clinic whether it has a preferred carrier and whether your snake’s species, condition or expected journey calls for special instructions. If you may arrive early or expect a long wait, tell the clinic: the RVC notes that dedicated reptile vivariums may be available for waiting. RVC transport guidance.

Do not attempt risky handling to load the snake
If the snake is large, aggressive, venomous or unfamiliar, do not casually reach into a bag or try to restrain its head based on brief online instructions. Merck describes head identification and restraint as clinical handling advice for an aggressive snake or one of unknown disposition; owners should contact an appropriately equipped veterinary team for case-specific arrangements rather than attempt that procedure themselves.
