Move people and pets away, give the snake space, and call local animal control or a qualified wildlife-removal professional if you cannot safely manage the situation. Do not approach, handle, kill, corner, or trap an unidentified snake. If anyone is bitten, seek immediate medical care; take a bitten pet to a veterinarian promptly.
What to do right away
- Move people and pets away. Keep children and animals out of the room and prevent anyone from approaching the snake. Do not crowd it or block its path.
- Do not try to remove it. Do not handle, kill, corner, or trap an unidentified snake. The CDC advises people in the United States to call animal control for a snake inside a home rather than attempt removal themselves: CDC wildlife guidance.
- Call for local help. Contact your local animal-control agency or a qualified wildlife-removal professional. If you suspect the snake may be venomous, use the appropriate local wildlife or emergency contact. Which agency responds, and who is authorized to remove or relocate a snake, depends on your location.
- Help responders locate it without getting closer. If you can observe safely, note where the snake went and its general size, shape, and color. Do not approach to identify it or take a photo. Appearance alone is not a reliable reason to handle or attempt removal.
Should you close doors or open an exit?
Follow local agency instructions. Advice differs by jurisdiction: CDC guidance for the United States is to call animal control and not try to remove or trap the snake, while Queensland government guidance describes closing interior doors and opening exterior doors and windows to provide an exit, while keeping everyone well clear. Do not approach the snake to carry out steps that would put you or others closer to it.

A pet is bitten
Keep your pet calm, prevent it from approaching the snake, and contact a veterinarian right away. Do not delay veterinary care while trying to identify or catch the snake. CDC advice for pets is available in its wildlife guidance.
If the snake is your escaped pet
Even a familiar pet snake can be difficult to handle safely when loose, and a person who finds it may not know its species or temperament. Keep people and other pets away, do not let anyone try to catch it, and contact a veterinarian, animal control, or a qualified remover for location-specific advice. If a bite occurs, follow the appropriate medical or veterinary guidance above.

Why local guidance matters
Removal rules and agency pathways differ. For example, New Jersey Fish & Wildlife provides state-specific guidance for certain suspected venomous snakes, while Queensland identifies authorized snake catchers under its own rules.
