Move people and pets away, give the rattlesnake plenty of space, and do not try to approach, catch, or kill it. If it is inside your home, call local animal control or a qualified wildlife-control professional. If anyone is bitten, call emergency services and get medical care immediately.
What to do when you spot a rattlesnake
- Stop and keep your distance. Don’t move closer to get a better look. Slowly move away, keeping a clear route to safety. Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources recommends staying at least 10 feet away; that is Utah agency guidance, not a guarantee that a snake cannot strike from that distance. Give it ample space rather than treating any distance as permission to approach. Utah DWR’s guidance
- Keep others away. Get children and pets indoors or well away from the area, and warn visitors or neighbors who might enter it.
- Leave the snake alone. Don’t throw anything at it, prod it, try to capture or kill it, or approach for a photo. Pursuing or threatening it can put you at risk of a bite. California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife says rattlesnakes usually retreat when given space and not threatened, but a defensive snake may not always rattle before striking. If the snake is outdoors
If it is in a yard or another outdoor area where people and pets can safely stay away, keep the area clear and let the snake move off undisturbed. Don’t try to herd it toward an exit or handle it, even if it appears to be leaving. If you cannot keep people or pets away from the area, contact your local animal-control or wildlife agency for advice.
If the snake is inside your house or garage
Keep everyone out of the room or area and do not try to remove, trap, or corner the snake. The CDC advises calling animal control for a snake in the home; local arrangements differ, and the agency may refer you to a qualified wildlife-control professional. New Jersey Fish and Wildlife also directs residents to local animal control or a wildlife-control professional for an unidentified snake indoors. If a person is bitten
- Move away from the snake and keep other people and pets clear.
- Call 911 or your local emergency number and get medical attention immediately. Follow emergency-service instructions; do not delay care to identify the snake or try to retrieve it.
- Do not apply a tourniquet or ice, cut the wound, or try to suck out venom. California DFW advises taking the victim to the nearest medical facility. If a pet is bitten
Move your pet away from the snake, keep it calm, and contact a veterinarian immediately. Call the nearest emergency veterinary clinic for instructions. The CDC advises carrying the pet if possible to limit its activity. Don’t chase or approach the snake to identify it. Veterinary services and antivenom availability vary by location. How to reduce future encounters
After the snake has left or a professional has removed it, reduce places that can shelter snakes or attract their prey:
- Prevent rodent problems around the home.
- Remove brush piles and stacks of logs that can provide cover.
- Supervise children outdoors and keep pets away from snakes.
- When walking outdoors, wear sturdy boots and avoid tall grass, weeds, and heavy underbrush, as California DFW recommends.

Animal-control arrangements, wildlife contacts, laws, species, and emergency veterinary resources vary by location. Look up your city or county animal-control service or state wildlife agency. For a snake indoors, start with animal control; if it does not handle removals, ask for a referral to a qualified wildlife-control professional. Verify that any private provider serves your area and is qualified before arranging service.
