What to do first
- Create distance. Ask occupants to move away calmly. Keep children and other people from returning to the area. At a school, tell a responsible adult and make sure children do not harass or handle the snake, as UF/IFAS advises.
- Do not try to deal with the snake yourself. Do not approach, touch, chase, corner, trap, or kill it—even if someone thinks it is harmless. WorkSafe Queensland’s workplace guidance says to use a licensed professional when removal is needed.
- Alert the people responsible for the building. Notify security, facilities staff, a supervisor, or the site manager. They can keep people away and follow the building’s response plan.
- Call the appropriate local responder. Contact animal control, the relevant wildlife agency, or a properly licensed removal professional, depending on local rules. There is no universal snake-removal number or licensing system.
Should you close the room or open an exit?
Follow local responder instructions and do not cross near the snake to reach a door or window. Indoor advice differs by jurisdiction and setting: Singapore’s Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) advises keeping exterior doors and windows open if a snake is in a room, while a Queensland education workplace fact sheet advises evacuating the room and, if possible, closing its doors until the snake leaves or a professional removes it. Do not take either action if doing so requires approaching the snake.
If the snake has left or is no longer visible
Keep people out of the area and tell building staff what happened. Do not search for the snake, move items where it might be hiding, or assume the area is safe just because it is out of sight. Ask local responders or building personnel what to do next.
If someone may have been bitten
Call emergency services or your local emergency number and get medical care promptly; do not wait for symptoms or delay care to identify or photograph the snake. US CDC/NIOSH workplace guidance says not to drive yourself. It also advises against cutting the wound, sucking out venom, applying ice, or using a tourniquet. This is US guidance; follow emergency dispatchers and clinicians for care where you are.

Why you should not try to identify or remove it
You do not need to decide whether a snake is venomous before keeping clear. Trying to inspect, corner, capture, or kill it can bring you closer to it. Leave removal to the appropriate local responder or a licensed professional; rules and services vary by location.
