Use an enclosure with a close-fitting lid or door that positively latches or locks, and check every seam, vent and equipment opening—not just the main access point. Close and recheck all openings after feeding, cleaning or handling. If you cannot secure the enclosure reliably, repair it or replace it with a suitable one.
Secure every way out
Snake-housing guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals calls for an escape-proof cage with sealed seams and a secure top that locks. UK government advisory standards for the settings they cover similarly describe tight seams, securely screened holes, and well-fitted lids or doors fastened with latches, hooks or clasps. Together, these recommendations mean the whole enclosure needs to contain the snake—not only its largest door.
- Lid or doors: Make sure the access point fits and its latch, clip or lock fully engages. When secured, it should not be readily lifted or slid open.
- Seams and corners: Inspect joins, corners and door edges for gaps.
- Vents and fittings: Check that ventilation openings are screened and that cable routes or equipment pass-throughs do not leave an unsecured opening.
Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences attributes this advice to Dr. Sharman Hoppes, a clinical associate professor: “It is important for owners to recognize that no snake is safe without a lid that properly latches.” The statement appears in its advice on keeping snakes as pets.
Make closure part of the routine
- After feeding, cleaning or handling, close the lid or door fully.
- Engage every latch, clip or lock intended to secure that opening.
- Check that it is seated and that the other access points, seams and equipment openings remain secure.
A closure that only rests in place is not the same as a secured access point. If a latch no longer holds, the lid does not fit, or a gap cannot be secured, repair the enclosure with safe, compatible materials or use a suitable replacement. Do not rely on a loose object or improvised cover instead of a dependable closure. Hardware must fit the enclosure; the cited sources support the function of secure closures, not the compatibility of any particular clip or lock model.

Keep security compatible with suitable housing
Do not block ventilation or otherwise compromise the snake’s housing to prevent escape. The enclosure still needs suitable ventilation and species-appropriate conditions. If you are unsure how to secure an opening without affecting those needs, consult species-specific husbandry guidance or a veterinarian experienced with reptiles.
If the snake keeps pushing at the enclosure
VCA’s guidance on common problems in pet snakes describes snakes repeatedly pushing their noses or faces against a lid, glass or enclosure wire. First check that the enclosure is secure. VCA also advises providing secure hiding places and varied structures to climb when escape attempts continue. The behavior does not, by itself, establish a single cause; review whether the snake’s species-specific habitat and environmental needs are being met. Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian if the behavior persists or the snake may have injured itself. The CDC recommends routine veterinary care for pet reptiles.

Check local rules for regulated snakes
Requirements depend on location and which snakes and keepers a law covers. For example, Ohio Revised Code §935.12 requires a secure exterior latch or lock on the enclosure door or lid for the snakes and keepers covered by that provision. This is a jurisdiction-specific example, not a rule for every pet snake. Check the laws where you live, especially if the species is regulated or venomous. The UK government’s advisory standards apply to their stated animal-care context, not as universal pet-ownership law.
