Did People Buried at Wadi Nafūn Eat Sharks? What the Evidence Shows

Stable-isotope analysis at Oman’s Wadi Nafūn tomb suggests marine foods and possibly shark meat in the buried community’s diet, but the interpretation is still being investigated.

People buried at Wadi Nafūn in Oman may have eaten shark, according to researchers interpreting stable-isotope measurements from human bones and teeth. The evidence points to marine foods and may make shark meat an important part of the community’s diet—but it is not yet a definitive identification of shark flesh or proof of how it was obtained.

What researchers found at Wadi Nafūn

Wadi Nafūn is the site of a collective Neolithic tomb in Oman. Its burial structures date to the first half of the fifth millennium BCE, and the monument was used for more than 300 years. Calling it “7,000 years old” is a rounded description; the more specific archaeological dating places it in that fifth-millennium-BCE period.

The dietary interpretation comes from stable-isotope analysis of bioapatite, the mineral component preserved in bones and teeth. Researchers use isotope measurements to help assess the contribution of marine and terrestrial foods, as well as environmental conditions and population mobility. The Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences describes the results as indicating a varied diet that included marine resources and possibly shark meat. The Institute’s 15 January 2026 announcement attributes that interpretation to ongoing analysis.

Does the evidence prove that the community ate sharks?

No. The research team considers shark meat a possible important food source based on its isotope results, but the available account presents this as an interpretation under investigation—not a conclusive identification of a meal. The team says ongoing analysis of dental calculus is examining preserved microparticles and proteins, which may help confirm or refine the interpretation.

The distinction matters: isotope analysis can provide evidence about broad dietary contributions, while the researchers’ announced follow-up is intended to look for more specific traces. Until that work is reported, the careful conclusion is that the results suggest the buried population consumed marine foods and may have eaten shark.

What the tomb’s marine finds do—and do not—show

A peer-reviewed Antiquity excavation article describes marine-associated finds at the site, including a tiger-shark tooth, a stingray barb, and a bone fish-hook from Mound 2. These objects add archaeological context for connections with marine environments. On their own, however, they do not prove that the people buried there ate sharks. The article says dietary patterns were to be explored further through dental wear and dental-calculus analysis. Read the excavation study in Antiquity.

Why the finding is notable

Oman’s arid conditions make organic remains difficult to preserve, according to the research team. Mineralized material in teeth and bones offers another way to investigate past diets. The team also reports that isotope data may indicate that some groups originated as much as 50 km from Wadi Nafūn, underscoring that the tomb’s buried community may have included people with varied backgrounds.

The result is intriguing because it links human remains to a possible marine food source in a setting where direct food remains can be scarce. But the finding does not establish that shark hunting was the community’s dominant subsistence activity, that hunting was communal or ritualized, or what method people used to catch sharks.
