Desert locusts can gather in swarms dense enough to put tens of millions of adults into a single square kilometre. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says such a swarm can eat in a day as much food as about 35,000 people. A widely repeated description of a swarm stretching 40 miles is attributed to David Attenborough by the assigned Indian Defence Review article, but that wording has not been independently verified here; FAO’s density and feeding figures offer a firmer measure of their potential impact.
What is a desert locust?
The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) is a short-horned grasshopper. Locusts are not a separate kind of insect from grasshoppers: what distinguishes them is their ability to change behavior and habits as density rises, and to migrate over long distances. Desert locusts may be solitary or gregarious; the gregarious phase can form flying adult swarms or bands of wingless young called hoppers. (FAO Locust Watch; FAO Desert Locust overview)
How big can a locust swarm get?
FAO reports that a square kilometre of desert locust swarm may contain 40 million to 80 million adults, with the overview giving up to 80 million. That is a density figure, not a claim that every swarm reaches that size or density. Area, density and total insect count are different measures: an estimate of a swarm’s area alone does not establish how many locusts it contains.
The assigned Indian Defence Review article attributes to David Attenborough a description of swarms joining into plagues several billion strong and as much as 40 miles wide. The linked BBC video could not be independently checked for this article, so the 40-mile wording should be treated as an attributed description rather than a verified measurement. Why do desert locusts swarm?
When locusts become crowded, they can shift from solitary to gregarious behavior. That change is associated with differences in appearance as well as behavior. Suitable breeding conditions help populations develop: moist sandy or sand-clay soil provides favorable egg-laying conditions, while green vegetation supports developing hoppers.
Rain can help create favorable conditions for survival and reproduction, but rain by itself does not prove locusts are present or that a swarm will form. FAO notes that suitable conditions may occur without locusts being there. The species’ total life span is highly variable, at about three to five months, according to its FAQ. (FAO Desert Locust FAQ)

How much food can a swarm eat?
An adult desert locust consumes roughly its own weight—about two grams—in fresh food each day, according to FAO. At the swarm scale, FAO estimates that one square kilometre of locusts can eat in a day as much food as about 35,000 people. The FAQ says that comparison uses a USDA average food-consumption assumption of 2.3 kilograms per person per day. These are estimates, but they explain why large swarms can rapidly threaten crops, pasture and the livelihoods that depend on them. (FAO Desert Locust overview; FAO Desert Locust FAQ)
How far and how fast do they travel?
FAO gives a flight speed of about 16–19 kilometres per hour with the wind, and says swarms may travel 5–130 kilometres or more in a day. Wind affects the speed, and daily travel is not a fixed distance. During quiet periods, desert locusts inhabit arid and semi-arid parts of Africa, the Near East and Southwest Asia; during plagues, their spread can extend much farther. (FAO Desert Locust FAQ)

Do locusts harm people or pets?
The main danger from desert locusts is to crops, forage and food security—not direct attacks on people or animals. FAO says locusts do not attack people or animals and reports no evidence that they carry diseases harmful to humans. It notes that locust-related particles and other exposures can act as allergens, particularly for people already susceptible to asthma. That is a limited exposure-related caveat, not evidence that locusts are a disease threat to people or pets. (FAO Desert Locust FAQ)

Forecasting and early warning
FAO’s Desert Locust Information Service combines reports from affected countries with weather, habitat and satellite information. It issues country-specific bulletins and forecasts up to six weeks ahead; that is a forecast horizon, not a guarantee of precision or of equal field capacity in every country. FAO’s Locust Watch portal provides forecasts and early warnings and has archives dating to 1975. Current outbreak conditions vary by country and can change, so the latest bulletin is the relevant source for a location-specific update. (FAO Locust Watch; FAO Desert Locust overview)

Field response
National agriculture ministries and locust units have primary responsibility for surveys and control operations. FAO describes insecticide applied directly to swarms and hopper bands as the principal current control method. Its FAQ describes mainly organophosphate products in ultra-low-volume formulations, applied with vehicle-mounted or aerial sprayers. This is a description of operational practice, not a recommendation for individuals; pesticide choices and procedures should follow current national guidance. (FAO Desert Locust FAQ)
