Sturgeons are not sharks: they are a distinct group of fish, and different species live in freshwater rivers and lakes or move between rivers and coastal or marine waters.
How can you identify a sturgeon?
Sturgeons have an elongated snout and four whisker-like sensory barbels near the mouth. The barbels help them detect food along the bottom. Their toothless mouth can extend outward to draw in prey, and five rows of bony plates, called scutes, run along the body. A tail with a larger upper lobe is known as heterocercal.
Together, the scutes and tail give a sturgeon an armored, shark-like appearance, but a sturgeon is not a shark.
Where do sturgeon live?
Habitat differs by species. Some sturgeons use both freshwater and saltwater habitats during their lives; others live in freshwater lakes and rivers.

Atlantic sturgeon: rivers, coasts, and the sea
Atlantic sturgeon spend much of adulthood in marine and coastal waters, then migrate into freshwater rivers to spawn. Young fish develop in freshwater and move downstream through brackish water toward marine habitat. Adults commonly return to the river where they were born to reproduce. NOAA Fisheries describes this life cycle in its Atlantic sturgeon profile.
Lake sturgeon: freshwater lakes and rivers
Lake sturgeon inhabit large freshwater lakes and rivers. They migrate into large rivers to spawn; juveniles later move into lakes. The name does not mean they live only in lakes. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service provides a lake sturgeon profile.

What do sturgeon eat?
Sturgeons feed near the bottom. Their barbels help locate prey, which they draw in with a protrusible, toothless mouth. Atlantic sturgeon eat crustaceans, worms, and mollusks; their diet can also include small fish and other bottom-dwelling animals. Food varies by species and habitat.
How large do sturgeon get, and how long do they live?
Size and lifespan vary considerably, so figures for one species should not be treated as limits for the entire sturgeon group.

| Species | Reported size and lifespan | Reproductive timing |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic sturgeon | Up to about 14 feet and 800 pounds; recorded living up to 60 years (NOAA Fisheries, page updated 2026). | Southern populations may mature at 5–19 years; in northern rivers, maturity may occur as late as age 34 (NOAA Fisheries). |
| Lake sturgeon | About 7 feet and 200–300 pounds; the largest and oldest can live up to 150 years (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; page date not confirmed). | Generally do not reproduce until 10–30 years of age and spawn intermittently (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service). |
These species-specific examples show why a single size, age, or lifespan cannot describe every sturgeon. Late maturity and intermittent spawning can also make populations slower to recover after heavy fishing pressure.

Caviar is processed sturgeon roe. Atlantic sturgeon eggs became highly prized, and the fishery expanded in the late 1800s in a period NOAA describes as a “Black Gold Rush.” Overfishing, together with habitat loss, contributed to steep declines.

NOAA Fisheries says all five U.S. Atlantic sturgeon distinct population segments are listed as endangered or threatened: four are endangered and the Gulf of Maine segment is threatened. Those designations apply to Atlantic sturgeon populations in the United States, not to every sturgeon species worldwide.
What threatens sturgeon?
For Atlantic sturgeon, NOAA identifies entanglement in fishing gear, degraded or blocked habitat, vessel strikes, and changing environmental conditions as threats. Dams and other barriers can keep fish from reaching spawning and rearing habitat. These pressures compound the effects of slow maturation and infrequent reproduction.

Rules depend on where you are and which species you mean. In the United States, NOAA Fisheries states that it is illegal to fish for, catch, or keep Atlantic, Shortnose, and Gulf sturgeon. That is a U.S.-specific statement from NOAA’s Atlantic sturgeon page, last updated June 5, 2026; it should not be treated as a worldwide rule. For other places and species, check current local official regulations before fishing.
