Raising Beefalo starts with verifying what the animals are—not assuming that a registry label proves measured bison ancestry. Plan for cattle-and-bison-cross management, confirm each animal’s pedigree and health history, and build a local veterinary, handling, pasture, and marketing plan before buying stock. Practical recommendations below draw partly on USDA bison guidance, which is a planning starting point rather than a Beefalo-specific rulebook.

What is a Beefalo?

Beefalo are bred from American bison and domestic cattle. The American Beefalo Association defines a Fullblood Beefalo as 37.5% bison and 62.5% bovine by breeding. Its registry also includes other percentage and ancestry categories, so “Beefalo” does not by itself identify one uniform genetic composition. See the American Beefalo Association registration rules and Oklahoma State University’s breed overview.

A pedigree percentage is not the same as ancestry detected in a genetic sample. In a 2025 project summary, USDA Agricultural Research Service reported that most historical Beefalo animals it examined—including key founding animals—had no detectable bison genetic material, and none met the 37.5% bison standard. A small fraction showed 2–18% bison influence, while many showed indicine (Zebu) ancestry. Those findings concern the historical samples tested; they do not establish the ancestry of every currently registered animal. The agency’s summary points to the 2024 study “Most Beefalo cattle have no detectable bison genetic ancestry”.

Plan the herd before you buy

Start with the purpose of the herd—breeding, meat production, or another goal—and assess whether your land, facilities, labor, veterinary access, and potential market fit. USDA’s bison transition handbook identifies personnel and training, pasture management, herd health and monitoring, culling decisions, and continued education as elements of a management plan. These are useful planning prompts, not Beefalo-specific prescriptions. See USDA’s Transitioning from Cattle to Bison: An Introduction.

  • Check local rules for animal classification, transport, health documentation, and marketing before committing to a purchase.
  • Confirm that a viable buyer and processing route exist for your intended product.

No universal acreage-per-head or stocking-rate figure is established by the sources available here. Set stocking decisions with local knowledge of forage, climate, soil, water, and the animals’ needs rather than relying on a generic Beefalo number.

Choose animals and arrange transport carefully

Ask the seller for registration and parentage records, vaccination and deworming history, known disease exposure, feed and mineral practices, and herd health records. Ask how the animals have been handled and whether they have a documented reproductive history if breeding is part of your plan. USDA’s bison guidance notes that younger stock may adjust more readily to new surroundings, but an animal’s suitability also depends on its individual history and your facilities.

Before the sale, check health and movement requirements with the relevant authorities in both the origin and destination jurisdictions. The USDA handbook emphasizes that classifications and requirements vary by jurisdiction and states: “Transportation is a crucial aspect of acquiring animals.” Plan the route, vehicle, unloading area, and receiving pasture in advance; difficult handling can result in escapes or injury.

Quarantine and acclimation

USDA bison guidance recommends at least a couple of weeks of isolation or quarantine after arrival, followed by gradual release into a larger pasture. Treat that as a bison-management starting point, not a fixed Beefalo protocol. Ask a veterinarian familiar with your herd and local disease risks to set the quarantine period, monitoring, and any testing or treatment plan. Provide adequate room, feed, water, and a secure perimeter during the transition.

Set up feeding around the animals and your production goal

Do not assume Beefalo universally need less feed, grow faster, or produce a particular carcass outcome than cattle. The available Beefalo-specific production evidence is limited to particular animals and conditions, not a general feeding formula.

A study in Brazil evaluated 36 crossbred animals that were three-quarters Beefalo and one-quarter Nellore. It compared feedlot and Brachiaria pasture systems, alongside castration at 8 or 13 months and no castration. The feedlot group’s diet had a 55:45 roughage-to-concentrate ratio; the pasture group received concentrate at 0.8% of body weight. These were study methods, not recommendations for an individual farm. The authors reported that non-castrated animals finished on pasture and slaughtered at 18 months needed more intensive feeding management or potentially more time to achieve ideal carcass finish. The result is specific to that trial; genetics, forage, climate, management, and the target market can all affect outcomes. See the study abstract on PubMed.

Breeding: verify fertility, parentage, and goals

“Hybrid” does not mean automatically sterile or automatically fertile. Reproductive capacity depends on the cross and generation. A 1995 abstract reported sterile males and fertile females among first-generation bison–domestic cow hybrid progeny, with fertile males appearing in later generations after hybrid females were crossed with fertile males from parental forms. A 1997 abstract described reproductive capacity in hybrid females as well as embryo and fetal mortality and relative sterility in some early-generation females. These findings describe specific crossing schemes; they cannot predict whether a particular animal will breed successfully. See the abstracts on hybrid male fertility and hybrid female reproduction.

Before starting a breeding program, review registry papers, sire and dam records, bison-percentage records, and the animal’s reproductive history. The Beefalo Association’s rules call for DNA or marker verification in specified registration situations. Have a veterinarian or qualified breeding professional assess reproductive suitability; paperwork and a stated breed category alone are not a guarantee of fertility or pregnancy success.

Health care and safe handling

Work with a veterinarian who can consider the animal’s recorded ancestry, herd disease risks, local requirements, and the available evidence. USDA says bison producers commonly consult cattle veterinarians about vaccination and deworming, but notes that few vaccines were developed specifically for bison and cattle vaccines have not necessarily been tested on bison. That caution is not a Beefalo vaccine schedule or proof that bison and Beefalo respond identically; do not adopt a protocol without veterinary guidance.

The USDA handbook discusses digestive, respiratory, reproductive, parasitic, nutritional, sudden-death, and toxic-plant concerns in bison herds. It also treats periodic herd work as stressful and recommends trained personnel and deliberate handling plans. Do not assume all Beefalo share one temperament: behavior varies with the individual animal, breeding, previous handling, and facilities. Train handlers in low-stress methods and match the handling system to the animals with experienced advice.

How Beefalo differ from cattle and bison in practice

There is no single universal scorecard for choosing among them, and the available sources do not establish a numerical comparison of stocking rate, feed costs, growth, or profitability. Evaluate the specific animals and operation across these factors:

  • Identity: distinguish recorded pedigree and registry status from ancestry detected in a genetic test.
  • Handling: assess the actual herd’s history and behavior, then determine whether your people and facilities can manage it safely.
  • Breeding: check generation, parentage, and documented reproductive history rather than assuming fertility from the hybrid label.
  • Land and inputs: match forage, water, and supplemental feeding decisions to your property and goals.
  • Compliance and care: confirm local veterinary, health, and transport requirements before acquisition.
  • Market access: establish a realistic buyer and processing route for the animals or product you plan to sell.

For scale only, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 192,477 bison on private U.S. farms and ranches; that figure is bison inventory, not a count of Beefalo. USDA FSIS provides the figure in its bison overview.
