Flying Fish: How They Glide, Feed, and Escape Predators

Flying fish accelerate underwater, burst through the surface, and glide on enlarged fins. Some use their tails to extend a glide, while plankton and small crustaceans make up part of their diet.

Flying fish do not flap through powered flight. They accelerate underwater, burst through the surface, and glide with their enlarged fins spread. Some can beat the lower lobe of the tail against the water to extend the launch and make successive glides. “Hunt” needs a qualification: plankton and small crustaceans are part of their diet, but the available sources do not establish one universal hunting method.

Do flying fish actually fly?

No. “Flying” describes how they travel above the water, not powered flight: flying fish launch themselves from the sea and glide rather than flap their fins to stay airborne. As Brian Jones explains in NOAA’s educational podcast, Episode 4: The Flying Fish, they “actually glide through the air after launching themselves from the water.”

The launch takes active effort. A fish accelerates underwater, angles toward the surface, and uses rapid tail beats to break through. Once airborne, it spreads its enlarged pectoral fins to glide. In some species, the lower lobe of the tail can reach back into the water and beat against it, adding thrust for another surface-assisted glide.

How far can flying fish glide?

Published figures describe upper limits, not the distance an average fish travels on every leap. NOAA’s 2021 educational episode says a flying fish can glide more than 600 feet in one burst. National Geographic reports a single-glide maximum of up to 655 feet, and up to 1,312 feet across consecutive glides. The latter figure describes a series, not one uninterrupted glide.

What do flying fish eat, and how do they feed?

Plankton is a major food source, and small crustaceans are also included in descriptions of their diet. National Geographic and the National Wildlife Federation describe these foods, but the available accounts do not lay out a detailed pursuit sequence or a single hunting technique used by all flying fish. Their feeding is better described in terms of what they eat than as a specialized chase.

Where do flying fish live?

Flying fish live in warm ocean waters around the world. They are often found near the surface and well offshore. In the Gulf of Mexico, NOAA describes floating Sargassum patches as food-rich habitat important to eggs and young fish.

Some flying fish attach their eggs to seaweed or floating debris using sticky filaments. Sargassum patches can also provide places for young fish to grow. Juveniles of some species have structures that help them resemble plant material, though these details should not be assumed to apply to every species.

Why do flying fish glide?

Escape from underwater predators is the leading explanation for the glide. Predators named in accounts by National Geographic and the National Wildlife Federation include tuna, mackerel, marlin, swordfish, and other large fish. Once out of the water, a flying fish may also be vulnerable to birds.

This is a widely cited functional interpretation, not proof that every leap is triggered by a predator. The glide carries a fish away from underwater danger, but the sources do not establish the immediate cause of every individual launch.

How do two-winged and four-winged flying fish differ?

All flying fish have enlarged pectoral fins. In two-winged forms, these are the prominent gliding surfaces; in four-winged forms, the pelvic fins are enlarged as well. The labels describe differences in fin shape, not powered flight: both types launch and glide.

What do ancient flying-glider fossils tell us?

A 2015 Smithsonian Magazine account discusses Wushaichthys exquisitus, an extinct relative dated to about 235–242 million years ago. The report describes a proposed sequence among ancient thoracopterids involving skull changes, tail features useful for launching, winglike fins, and later scale reduction.

Thoracopterids are not the same group as living flying fish, which belong to Exocoetidae. The fossil account does not establish a simple direct-ancestor line from Wushaichthys to modern flying fish.
