Sharpness varies by species and by fin, so don’t assume every fish—or every fin—is harmless. When handling a fish, also watch for teeth and sharp gill-plate edges, and avoid grabbing a struggling fish carelessly.
What makes a fish fin sharp?
Fish fins include structures that differ in stiffness and shape. A useful distinction is between softer fin rays and stiff, pointed spines: a spine may be sharp enough to injure skin, while not every part of a fin is pointed. The NOAA-hosted Texas coastal fish guide uses fin spine and ray counts, along with body proportions and other features, to help identify fish. It is an older, regionally focused identification guide, not a current safety standard.
The CDC notes that some larger fish have sharp points in their fins that could scratch or damage skin. EPA fish-sampling instructions also warn that some specimens have fins or spines sharp enough to puncture packaging; that is a field-sampling context, not household handling advice. Neither source suggests that all fish fins are sharp.
What parts of a fish can hurt you?
A fin spine is only one possible hazard. Missouri Department of Conservation guidance warns that some fish have sharp teeth. It also notes that white bass and stripers have sharp gill-plate edges that can slice a finger placed beneath the gills.

Catfish need particular care. The Missouri agency says contact with the spines at the front of the dorsal or pectoral fins can introduce mild but painful venom. The risk depends on the species and the structure involved, so a hold that is suitable for one fish may be unsafe for another.
How to handle a caught fish more safely
Missouri Department of Conservation guidance recommends using a landing net to steady a fish while unhooking or measuring it. Keep your hands and legs clear if the fish is flopping, and use hemostats or needle-nose pliers to remove hooks rather than reaching near the hook with your fingers.

For catfish, the agency describes holding the fish from underneath, with fingers firmly beneath the pectoral spines. Do not treat this as a universal hold: the same guidance gives different handling advice for different fish and warns against lipping fish with sharp teeth. Missouri’s recommendations are local guidance, not a rule for every species or location; follow applicable local regulations and species-specific advice.
Handling fish in an aquarium
For aquarium care, the CDC recommends gloves, especially if you have cuts or wounds or will work around spiny fish. Tank water and aquarium items can carry germs, so wash your hands with soap and running water after aquarium care. CDC guidance says children younger than five should not clean tanks or handle aquarium items.

What to do if a fin or spine scratches you
Wash a scratch or cut with soap and water immediately. The CDC advises seeking medical attention if the wound is serious or becomes red, painful, warm, or swollen. Serious signs include uncontrolled bleeding, loss of function, extreme pain, or exposed muscle or bone. Tell the healthcare provider that the injury involved a fish or aquarium contact.
