Does Coral Bleaching Kill Fish?

Bleaching stresses coral but does not automatically kill fish. The effects depend on whether coral recovers, which fish rely on it, and how reef habitat changes over time.

Coral bleaching does not automatically kill fish. It stresses corals, some of which recover while others die. If coral mortality is extensive, fish that rely on living coral for food or shelter can decline; other species may respond differently, and some algae-eating fish can temporarily benefit as algae spreads.

How bleaching can affect fish

Bleaching happens when stressed corals lose the algae that help supply them with food and give them color. A bleached coral is not necessarily dead: it may recover if conditions improve, or die if stress is severe or prolonged. Fish impacts depend in part on which outcome occurs.

When coral dies, fish can lose resources in two main ways:

  • Less food: Coral-feeding fish lose prey and feeding opportunities as living coral declines.
  • Less shelter: Fish that shelter among or depend on coral for refuge can become more exposed as living coral is lost. The physical reef may continue to provide habitat for a time, but that structure can erode later.

NOAA’s reef-manager guide states, “Strongly coral-dependent fish species are expected to be the most affected by bleaching-induced coral mortality” (NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program, A Reef Manager’s Guide, 2006).

Why not every fish declines

Fish species do not all depend on coral in the same way. Some feed on coral or use it closely for shelter, while generalists and algae-eating species may be less dependent. After coral mortality, algae can spread over damaged reef and provide food for herbivorous fish; it may also offer habitat for juvenile fish. Algae also competes with living coral for space, so a temporary benefit to some fish does not mean the reef has recovered (NOAA on algae and Pacific reef recovery).

Responses can differ even within one reef system. At Aldabra Atoll in Seychelles, study authors reported that bleaching caused 50% coral mortality. On shallow reefs, mean fish abundance increased 77% between 2014 and 2016, largely driven by herbivores and omnivores as turf algae cover rose. Deep-reef fish abundance did not change in that comparison. These local findings show why fish abundance cannot be treated as a simple measure of coral health or generalized to reefs everywhere (Frontiers in Marine Science study, 2023).

Brightwell Aquatics Restor Coral Recovery Reef Supplement 125ml
  • ADVANCED GROWTH SUPPLEMENT - Restor Liquid boosts reef growth, nourishing live corals and allies in saltwater tanks. Packed with proteins and amino acids, it fosters health, growth, reproduction, and vibrant colors for maximum tissue growth rate
  • CORAL SURVIVAL - Restor doesn't directly reverse coral bleaching, but it supplies coral nutrients essential to coral survival during the recovery or reacquisition of zooxanthellae, potentially aiding resilience for a higher rate of recovery and to increasing coral growth rate for a vibrant reef
  • FOR HIGH-DENSITY AQUARIUMS - Aids in nurturing frags or recently introduced corals and allies in new reef tanks. Vital during lighting adjustment, prolonged high temperatures, tissue damage, fragging, propagation, and protection against predatory pests or unwanted grazing by aquarium inhabitants
  • DIRECTIONS – Shake well before use. Turn off mechanical filtration before adding Restor-fortified foods. Allow 10-15min after feeding before resuming filtration. Use a syringe type device to discharge 2-4” upstream of target organisms. Add up to 5ml of restore additive to a clean food container

Fish effects can emerge over time

Coral death and loss of reef structure are not the same event. Dead coral skeletons can maintain physical complexity for a while, allowing abundant and diverse fish communities to persist after live coral has declined. A Tanzania reef study documented this pattern, underscoring that immediate fish-habitat loss is not inevitable when corals die (Tanzania reef study).

As reef structure erodes, however, shelter and nursery habitat can diminish. Longer-term changes may appear in community composition or size structure rather than as an immediate drop in every fish count. A Seychelles analysis found that biomass of fished species above the size retained in fish traps changed little from 1994 to 2005, while assemblage size structure shifted. The authors interpreted the pattern as consistent with delayed effects of reduced reef complexity and fewer juvenile replacements. Biomass, abundance, size structure and fishery catch measure different things, so one stable indicator does not establish that the whole fish community was unaffected (Seychelles long-term analysis).

What studies can—and cannot—tell us about fish deaths

There is no universal rate for how many fish coral bleaching kills. Outcomes vary with the severity and duration of bleaching, whether coral recovers or dies, which fish species are present, reef depth and location, food availability, and how much physical structure remains. A local change in abundance is not the same as a count of fish killed, and a result from one reef should not be presented as a global effect.

For example, NOAA monitoring at Jarvis Island recorded widespread bleaching and coral mortality after unusually warm conditions in 2014–2015. Some fish species were observed less often in 2016. By 2017, some observations had returned to previous ranges while others remained depleted. NOAA identified prolonged reduced food availability and habitat changes as possible factors and noted that more monitoring was needed to establish whether the changes persisted. The observations describe changes in particular species at one location; they do not show that bleaching alone caused every change or quantify fish deaths worldwide (NOAA’s Jarvis Island monitoring account).

The practical answer

Coral bleaching can contribute to fish declines when it leads to coral death and, later, degradation of reef habitat. The fish most at risk are those closely dependent on living coral for food or shelter. Other species may remain stable or temporarily increase, especially where algae becomes more abundant. The effect on a particular reef depends on the species, depth, timing and condition of the reef—not on bleaching alone.
