No. Lobsters are crustaceans, not fish—and they are not insects, either. The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is an invertebrate arthropod with a hard external skeleton, five pairs of legs, and a diet that changes as it grows. Here’s how its classification, body, and feeding habits fit together.
Are lobsters fish or insects?
Neither. The American lobster is a crustacean, a group of invertebrates within the larger arthropod phylum. Fish belong to a different animal group; a lobster has no backbone and is not classified as a fish.
Lobsters and insects are related because both belong to Arthropoda. NOAA Fisheries describes crustaceans as “closely related to insects and spiders.” That relationship does not make a lobster an insect: crustaceans and insects are distinct arthropod groups.

What does a lobster’s body look like?
Two main body regions
An American lobster’s body has two main sections: the cephalothorax, which combines the head and thorax, and the segmented abdomen, which forms the tail. The cephalothorax is covered by a hard plate called the carapace. Under the abdomen are small appendages called swimmerets; the tail fan consists of paired uropods and a central telson.
Ten legs, including two specialized claws
American lobsters have five pairs of legs—10 legs in total. The first pair is enlarged into two claws: one is adapted for crushing hard prey, while the other has finer edges suited to tearing softer food. The claws may differ in size and function. NOAA’s American lobster anatomy reference describes these body parts and their arrangement.

A shell that has to be shed
A lobster’s shell is an exoskeleton: an external skeleton that does not expand as the animal grows. To get bigger, the lobster molts, shedding the old shell and forming a replacement. NOAA says the American lobster may molt about 20–25 times between hatching and reproductive maturity or legal harvest size, a process taking roughly five to eight years. Those figures describe the American lobster, not every animal called a lobster. After molting, lobsters often eat their old shells, which helps replenish calcium while the new shell hardens.
Color and cooking
Live American lobsters are generally olive-green or greenish-brown, though color varies. The familiar bright red color is associated with cooking.

What do lobsters eat?
The American lobster is an opportunistic omnivore: what it eats depends on its life stage and on what food is available locally. During their first year, larvae and postlarvae feed on zooplankton. Adults may eat crabs, mollusks, worms, sea urchins, sea stars, fish, and large algae (macroalgae).
NOAA’s educational lobster facts page adds that lobsters hunt at night and catch prey such as fish, crabs, clams, mussels, and sea urchins; they may also eat other lobsters. This is a description of feeding behavior, not a fixed menu that every lobster follows.

Are all lobsters built the same way?
“Lobster” can refer to different crustaceans, so details about the American lobster should not automatically be applied to every lobster-like animal. NOAA distinguishes the American lobster from the spiny lobster by their front legs and head:
