Perth Zoo’s past stories of calf Zahara and giraffe mothers Kitoto and Ellie offer a lovely way to mark it—but those dated stories do not confirm which giraffes are currently at the Zoo or whether a 2026 celebration is scheduled. Check Perth Zoo’s current visitor information before planning a visit.
When is World Giraffe Day?
World Giraffe Day is observed annually on 21 June. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation presents it as a chance to celebrate giraffes while helping people learn about them and support their conservation. Its event guide suggests activities such as zoo events, education and crafts, and fundraising; these are general ideas, not confirmation of a Perth Zoo event.
Who is Zahara the giraffe?
Perth Zoo announced the name Zahara for its female giraffe calf on 23 October 2021. The Zoo said the name means “blossom or blooming flower” in Swahili and was chosen from more than 14,000 public entries. That announcement records the naming at the time; it does not establish Zahara’s current location or viewing status. Read Perth Zoo’s announcement.
Who are Kitoto and Ellie?
In an article published 5 May 2022, Perth Zoo identified Kitoto and Ellie as mothers of calves Akiki and Zahara, respectively. The story gives a glimpse of giraffe family life, but it is historical information rather than a current herd list. The Zoo’s motherhood article also reports that giraffe pregnancy lasts about 15 months and that calves can be up to 180 cm tall at birth.

What do giraffes eat, and what makes them distinctive?
Giraffes are browsers: Perth Zoo says their diet includes leaves, shoots, fruit and other vegetation. Their long, approximately 45 cm tongue helps them reach and handle foliage. Despite their elongated necks, giraffes have seven neck vertebrae, the same number as most mammals, though each vertebra is greatly extended. See the Zoo’s giraffe species page for its animal information.
Why does giraffe conservation matter?
Perth Zoo’s 2023 giraffe facts article reported a 40% decline in wild giraffe populations over the preceding 30 years, and connected its giraffe breeding program with raising awareness. That is the Zoo’s figure and framing in a 2023 article, not a newly measured 2026 statistic. For the Zoo’s explanation, see Seven giraffe facts to blow your spots off.

How can I see giraffes at Perth Zoo?
For an ordinary zoo visit, check Perth Zoo’s current visitor information for opening details and animal-viewing updates. The Zoo also lists a ticketed giraffe close encounter, but session dates, prices and availability can change. Its experience page says Zoo admission is additional and each participant needs an experience ticket. Children need a ticketed adult supervisor, children under two are not permitted, enclosed footwear is recommended, and the experience is not wheelchair accessible. Review the current requirements before booking on the giraffe experience page.
